Getting Upset Over Steroids: Why?

I find the people who make excuses almost as bad as the people who cheat themselves...

No Peds arent going to improve skill, but they obviously improve on things like durability, endurance, speed, mask pain, can reduce weight etc. Its cheating. No excuses.

Is it fair for a clean athlete who made the weight correctly, only to face an opponent who has used something against the rules to get their weight down, mask pain, increase speed, durability and endurance and keep energy levels up?
I would say not

 

Not just that, they can indirectly increase one's skill. As the old saying goes, talent is God given, skill is man-made. The equation looks like this:

Practical boxing skill = physical talent X boxing IQ X time invested

PED's can increase any or all three of these variables depending on the substance taken- there are ones that increase strength and speed, others that allow for reduced recovery time so one can train longer/more frequently, and different types of speeds that increase mental focus.

The biggest issues I have are twofold:

1) Too many fans are unrealistic about the limitations of testing and the uphill climb it faces (see my prior post in this thread), so extra testing gets marketed as perfect testing.

2) Boxing itself doesn't punish those caught cheating nearly enough. This is the big one and the one I despise. Fighters are allowed to keep titles and not have the result changed to a loss on their record, which tells me on some level boxing is encouraging more fighters to use PED's, not less. There is never any talk of holding fighters caught juicing out of the HOF like there is in baseball. There's no long-lasting negative consequences that hurt careers enough to dissuade fighters from using.

I agree, if there was adequate punishment for being caught it would dissuade people from cheating.
I think that when athletes take PEDs it is not to level the playing field, but to gain an unfair advantage.
