GGG always had tremendous punching and power, but I felt he lacked in pure boxing skills. Sometimes you see GGG blocking punches with his face lol, great chin, but unfortunately you lose points for that. This is why Canelo was able to outbox him with ease in the latter two fights, after making the necessary adjustments after the first. A boxer usually beats a puncher…
No, Golovkin had excellent fundamentals and his footwork was sublime. The only thing that held him back was his lack of speed. Dude's hands were slower than Floyd reading a sentence in a children's book.
GGG's defense in 3 Canelo fights is better than any opponent outside of Bivol & Floyd. Most people thought Canelo would knock GGG out in the 3rd fight, but Canelo had a hard time landing flush against a 40 year old GGG. If GGG choose to be defensively responsible, he's hard to hit. His biggest weakness is his speed. He's got great boxing fundamentals, great footwork and good defense and good offense. He was able to use his boxing skills to nullify Canelo's speed advantage in the first 2 fights. At age 40, his reflexes just declined too much. If he had a bit more handspeed, I don't think I would pick any middleweight over him.
As everybody seems to know, Golovkin wasn't the fastest middleweight. The reason for that is because he was kinda, well, OLD. He was considerably faster as a younger boxer. Let's shave 20 years off of GGG: This content is protected That's pretty fast especially when compared to the Golovkin we know in his last few bouts. So yeah, one of his major weaknesses was fighting a pro career when he was already stiffening up. Other than that I would say that he shouldn't have gone on his macho "you can't hurt me" streaks where he let the other guy unload combos on him and then grinned at him to say it didn't hurt. That sort of thing is a bad look for the judges and what's more, even a light puncher might suddenly plant his feet and let rip. Lest we forget, Tommy Hearns of all people was regarded as a featherfist at a certain stage of his career. The final thing I'd point out as a weakness is probably his stance, which is otherwise excellent. His slight forward crouch enables instant defence by dipping his head, raising a glove or dipping an elbow. The problem is that it appears to make him somewhat susceptible to the uppercut since he is kind of leaning over for it. Clearly not the world's biggest problem since he's had such a good career but a guy like Canelo I think twigged onto it and potted him with some good ones.
Golovkin didn’t respect Brook’s power so just kept on marching forward like how did Canelo did against Khan.
Still wasn’t a huge problem for him though. Speed seems like such an important aspect but guys like G showed that it really doesn’t matter sometimes. Here’s an example if you can spare three and a half minutes. This content is protected
