I've been watching the numbers. Ward has been at 175k for the last several months just barely at 189k recently . GGG just passed 190k on his way to 200k in style. GGG had around 80k fans during the Monroe fight
I use it as a gauge of popularity. GGG has DOUBLED his Twitter following. He's at 700k on Instagram. Let's see if the momentum continues
It is very relevant. Not many boxers based in the US break out above 20k twitter followers. Both Charlo bros are in the 20k range. Lara has 50k. Spence, by way of comparison, has 22k followers. Sure, many US fans know about spence, but outside the core base he is unknown. GGG, has jumped from 80k to 190k in less than a year. If his popularity continues to grow at this RATE, he could be at 400k by May 2017, just in time for the Canelo fight. IF GGG gets a Saunders fight, then a Jacobs fight in NYC, he will be ripe in popularity for a mega-clash in 2017. From a boxing fan point of view, i prefer to see the fight in Sept. But by having it next May I can see this fight easily breaking 1 million PPV views., could break 1.5 million views, depending on how fast GGG popularity CONTINUES to grow. Canelo seems to have hit a plateau. He cannot speak english and is probably losing some fans as a result of the GGG-WBC fiasco. As for throwing in Ward in the headline, its because I like seeing GGG surpass him in the sport. Ward could have done so much more but he chose to let his ego get in the way. Lets see what he does with the Krusher. I can still see Ward winning that fight.
