If FMJ moved up to 160lbs to face GGG years ago you GGG haters would be on his case for accepted that fight too. The difference between FMJ and Brook though is Brook is a legit 147lbs boxer and has a better chance vs GGG than FMJ would ever have. Brook does have a slim chance in this fight, he needs to be on his backfoot all night and keep the combos at a minimum to rack up the rds. Like hitting GGG 5 times and only getting hit once in every round would win Brook the fight. He's got to be better than special to manage that though, because GGG cuts of the ring better than anybody else atm
Biggest difference is that Canelo can take a year off after fighting Angulo, Kirkland, Lara, Trout, Mayweather, and Cotto back to back. On the other hand, Golovkin's opponents never seem to improve in terms of quality.
There's actually a very important difference. Golovkin tried to fight a middleweight FIRST. Golovkin TRIED to fight a middleweight name and the guy wouldn't sign. You CAN'T ignore that. It completely changes things. Canelo had plenty of people willing to face him, but chose a WW. Golovkin couldn't get a name, tried to sign one, and eventually had to resort to a WW. No, it's fundamentally not the same.
I have no problem with this fight. Of course the fight I would prefer is Canelo/GGG but we all(most of us anyway) know that will not happen until next year. This is an ok but not too popular way for GGG to up his profile. I've been telling you all that both fighters will get criticized for any opponent between now and Spt 17 and fully expect the hypocrisy finger to be pointed in Golovstan's and GGG's direction. Also fully expect the 'stans to work hard on trying to explain why GGG fighting a smaller man is totally different than what Canelo did. P.S. At the post above me, just snuck in before mine.
It's not too hard to figure out that fans (or haters wanting to see you get K.O.'ed) is where the money comes from in boxing. It doesn't come out of thin air. Because he is seen as very risky, he has spent a lot of years building up a fan base the hard way. By dominating his competition and getting K.O. after K.O. He finally gets to the point where he can easily make over a million per fight against nameless mandatories and maybe, just maybe start to become enough of a draw to tempt those top guys he wants into the ring. And now this. So yeah sure it may pay him 5 million for this fight which is an ok bump this one time, but how will he sell fights down the road without a fan base? And without the draw, how will he be able to generate the kind of money needed to tempt those other top guys in the ring that could really propel his career to that PPV level where the REAL money is? Obviously this one move probably won't lose him all his fans, but it's going to be a hit and it's certainly a step backwards. So strictly speaking in terms of cash, this was probably still a bad decision ultimately unless he has decided to cash out. My suggestion? Offer his entire purse for this fight to Jacobs' or Saunders to get them in the ring.
Would like to see GGG exhibit the same bravery and go after a fight with Kovalev/ Ward winner. Its a sad state of affairs cos everybody knows he ain't about that. Why I ask? Why... Why won't he challenge himself?
GGG is all about the $$$. He has a good thing going with HBO. He pretty much fights any hopeless fighter he and his team want and get a nice little 7 figure paycheck doing so.
This is the best you got? Why did GGG duck Ward at 168 when his own trainer who knows his capabilities better than anyone say GGG is better suited for 168, but now is making a career WW move up 13lbs?
I blame Christina Eubank and his father. What I heard, they tried to play promoters and dictate everything (for example wanted to double the ticket prices). GGG vs. Brooks is been made just to clean the mess Eubanks left to Sky and Hearns. Brooks has no chance what so ever and Golovkin wont get any credit for fighting Brooks. Did K2 had a choice here? They had a date in US for Golovkin fight but who against? Theoretically speaking, Lee and Quillin would have been good choices. The reality is that neither one would have taken the fight.
Here we go ^ Chris Eubank Sr is the spanner in the works in the CEJ / GGG fight because this fvcking spazz has to put his schlong in where it doesn't have to be. Clear as day that he stuffed up the CEJ / GGG fight by trying to control everything and that Hearn took Brook up on his offer to fight GGG as a backup. This has actually nothing to do with Golovkin who is fighting who he is told to. He signed for CEJ weeks ago. Krap fight but better than nothing I suppose.
