I used to think he was like Tszyu, but he's nothing like him. He's better and he's doing things I rarely see a fighter do in the ring. There are fighters are a the best at certain things. Take for instance: Mayweather is the best at using the shoulder roll and throwing pull-counters. Holyfield is the best at getting away with headbutts. Wlad & Ward (formerly Ruiz) are the best at clinching people. Golovkin is the best in a few categories, which is pretty amazing. 1. Mentally and Physically breaking down opponents. Everyone has a gameplan until they get into the ring with GGG. They stick to their gameplan for about 2 rounds before they go into survival mode and completely forget what they want to do. Murray talked a big game before the fight, but after the fight, he said "He was so strong, I just couldnt keep him off. I felt his power, but it was more his pressure." 2. Cutting off the ring. He's constantly trapping fighters in corners and on the ropes. Every opponent follows the same pattern. They have their back against the ropes and they go from one corner to the next while taking punishment. They can't run and they can't hide. 3. Applying physical and mental pressure. He's not a big middleweight, but mentally, he acts like a bully. He starts mentally dominating opponents from the opening bell. He lets them know he's going to start attacking and he's not backing off, no matter if the opponent is bigger than him. He makes them burn nervous energy and doesn't give them any breathing room. He doesn't smother himself and he's always in punching range. 4. Body shots. There is not better fighter at throwing body shots than Golovkin right now. He knocks people out/down with them on a consistent basis. The opponent's chin doesn't matter. If Golovkin lands perfect to the body, everyone south of cruiserweight would go down from it. It's just that simple. 5. Probing offense. Never seen anything like it. He varies his punching rhythm. Throws them at different speeds and uses a lot of misdirection to disguise his powershots. He's the only active fighter I've seen that does it and he does it really well.
Number 5 is pure artistry. Such a wide variety of punches also allows him to strike with surgical precision too. Murray is a big strong dude but was being chased from one corner to the next all night. On top of all the above GGG appears to have a granite jaw.
Here's an example of GGG mentally dominating Murray: http://www.snappytv.com/tc/487466/93768 Murray lands a punch, second guess himself and back himself into the ropes. Usually, when a fighter lands a good punch, he gains confidence...but in this case, he actually loses confidence.
It's the footwork, he is like a sheep dog that instinctively knows where that poor little lamb is going to turn before it even knows. Who can match the footwork?
Golovkin is the greatest thing going in this sport yet he is wildly underpaid and ridiculously avoided. The internal power brokers of boxing will never allow him his rightful place at the sports zenith. Don't you dare enter this sport thinking you will get treated fairly if you have the wrong passport and a fanbase that does not travel well.
he is the modern day Hagler, willing to trade and take punches to give his oponent back double, but is also a great technician, we should enjoy him while he's around, very special fighter
