Up until joe c fought Hopkins, their resumes weren't really all the dissimilar. A sting of defenses filled with contenders, titlists, or former titlists. Why do I get the impression you may think Jeff Lacy is better than anyone 3G's faced. I hope I'm wrong about that.
Lacy was seen as a real threat he was seen as the next big thing in boxing. Most thought he would brutally stop Calzaghe. Based on the threat level and seen as a big risk back then, the Lacy win is underrated.
Jones on joes record is like Barrera on khans Un justifiably go read ain't no ordinary Joe he states it in there himself Roy's shot to old I'd get no credit Fast forward six months and he is show boating against a shot to shyte old man celebrating the win like it meant anything Joe was good but not great imo
So...because Lacy was a hugely hyped (Sort of what you say about 3G), that makes it better? C'mon Pimp.... The hype a fighter gets can't be bashed for one guy, and used to boost another.
GGG has some very good B to A level scalps on his resume, but so far he does not have that career defining win against a HOF'er or at least someone who is at least in the conversation for HOF later on. Only guy out there in or around 160 that could provide GGG with that career win is Canyellow.
Who was hyped up and seen as a huge threat expected to beat GGG? He hasn't faced anyone like that, Calzaghe did. It makes it a good win because at the time Lacy was seen as the next big thing and most thought Calazghe would get beat. The way Lacy's career unfolded after that fight has no bearing IMO on how dangerous of a fight it was perceived at the time for Joe. It was a good win.
Please do not mention Slappy Calzaghe's name in the same sentence as the Undisputed Middleweight Champion. Slappy aint fit to carry his jockstrap
Zaggers Kessler Hopkins Lacy Bika ........ GGG Everyone brave enough to step up (including a supremely skilled huge punching roided Cruiserweight)
Again...you can't make a win great because of hype around a fighter. Perception means little in my book.
They are very good wins. Lacy was HEAVILY favoured over Calzaghe and was in most people p4p top 10 on this very forum actually. Marvin Hagler said he was P4P #5 at the time in the build up. When has GGG faced someone who he was a massive underdog against? We will never know how good Lacy may or may not have been because Calzaghe gave one of the worst beatdowns in modern boxing history. Bika is also a very good and underrated win, a lot of people thought Bika beat Ward. Makes you think really.
For sure, but that is only a very small part of Calzaghes career and many American fans didnt pay much attention or know the importance of some of the other match ups before Lacy. Before then, Calzaghe had a very impressive resume and was a top ATG SMW
