The lineal title is only as significant as the division allows it to be.

    Examples:

Martinez held the lineal title at 160. GGG was regarded as the top challenger, but since Martinez had a long career of not making money he opted to fight Chavez ($$), a homecoming fight in Argentina, and Cotto ($$). He made it clear he was not fighting GGG and was simply trying to cash in on a long career, and that's fine.

Cotto now holds the lineal title. Again, he's nearing the end of his career and looking for money fights. Alvarez was a good option, Mayweather or Pacquiao are also understandable. Anyone else besides GGG is a blatant duck.

If Cotto vacates 160 or retires and Quillin is still regarded as #2, then he has to fight GGG for the lineal title. If he simply decides not to, then imo he is vacating his #2 slot and should be bumped down by whoever is #3 (unless it's someone Quillin has beaten). since ratings are subjective, I think refusing to fight another champ for no good reason is good cause for being dropped in favor of someone who may be as good as you and is willing to fight.

What I'm saying is who says Quillin is the clear #2 in the division anyway?

Golovkin made his HBO debut two weeks prior to Martinez - Chavez Jr.
Both Martinez and Chavez took tune ups because a rematch was talked about and like you said, he wanted a homecoming fight.
After that he was sidelined again.

Golovkin turned relevant while Martinez was sidelined with injuries.

In the same time span Martinez fought 3 times. Cotto, Jr and Murray.
    Golovkin fought 7 times.

The "lineal champ" can avoid the best fighter in division, that's how it works.
    Soooo legitimate:patsch

This issue with the lineal title keeps coming up more and more lately. In the CW, LHW and the MW divisions, the lineal champion isn't percieved to be the best in the division by the clear majority of the fans and only hold on to it by not defending it against the best out there. The SMW, LMW and LWW divisions have their issues too, namely by not defending the lineal at all.

Of course it happened in the old days too, but holding the lineal titles hostage on one single continent seems to be the rule nowadays, wich clearly waters down it's significance.
Good chance guys like Golovkin and Kovalev will never be able to hold on to the lineal title just because the holders rater turn over their alphabet belt (WBC version in most cases) as defend it against them knowing they would almost certainly lose anyway.

He may not be lineal but I figure he's the champ in most peoples eyes

It's kind of like the people who said Wlad wasn't really the champ til 2011 or 2012

Golovkin is the man at 160

I guess it's fitting that Cotto has the belt now. He can carry on the lineage of "the champ" not fighting GGG.
Martinez didn't want any part of that either:lol:

I think most have given him a pass.
And it seems like he is going to retire. They were supposed to announce if he was going to retire or continue but for some reason did not.
