I think it's kind of ridiculous how little respect people are giving Canelo. Golovkin isn't knocking Canelo out unless he can force Canelo against the ropes and make Canelo pay for trying to counter. Which I personally don't see happening unless Canelo gasses in the second half. Canelo will be the one getting his shots off first in exhanges. Anyone predicting Golovkin by early knockout is only fooling themselves. Golovkin doesn't let his punches fly unless there is little threat coming back. He does all his best work when his opponent is shelled up worrying about surviving. Stylistically this makes Canelo a bad matchup for Golovkin. Canelo is less guard oriented and more reliant on slipping and rolling shots. Against past opponents, with the exception of Jacobs, Golovkin could throw a hard shot, land on the guard, and continue working until he forces that guard to open. Since Canelo will be slipping shots, Golovkins big shots will miss, throwing him off balance and leaving him open for counters. Jacobs avoided Golovkins punishment by using his size and reach to turn off the ropes preventing Golovkin from being able to setup his punishing offense. A result which showed a massive drop in power punches thrown by Golovkin and forcing him to cruise to a UD behind a superior Jab. Canelo on the other hand doesn't have the ability to do that. He does however have the ability to disrupt Golovkins rhythm by making him miss and punishing him with counters. Either Golovkins power punch output drops significantly, or Golovkin takes a lot of punishment. Either way, GGG is NOT knocking Canelo out early.
Strange, I was under the impression that it had been Canelo who was holding out and delaying the fight taking place. At least that's where all the criticism for it's delay seemed to be aimed. Even to the point of accusing Canelo of cowardice.
This actually might be true, although Jacobs was a tall guy like a Hearns, so he used his reach. Canelo does not have that and GGG is bigger than him. It will be hard for Canelo, but if he wins I see a decision.
That's a real handicap for a fighter knowing they need to KO a guy in order to win. They tend to press and their offense doesn't not flow naturally. Sanchez has already said that GGG needs to KO him and so did Oscar. Every road block possible is being put in front of GGG in this one.
Khan's More of a speed freak that's for sure. Seems like all his troubles started with Breidis when he was KOD in the first 30 seconds of the first round. Before Breidis he was unbeaten with a winning streak of eighteen fights. He remained unbeaten for three years after his first loss to Breidis Prescott via KO in 2008 for eight straight wins. Then Lamont Peterson stopped his winning streak, via KO in 2011. This was followed by another loss via KO at the hands of Danny Garcia in 2012. Then he had another winning streak of five victories in which he survived Maidana and won on points until he encountered Canelo in 2016 and lost by KO. Prior to the Canelo fight he had mentioned his success in surviving MaidanĂ¡ power as evidence that he could do the same with Canelo.
Trilogy not outta the question, but that depends how they both look in there. If it's a high action, back and forth big drama show, then the fans will demand a 2nd one. Ggg slowing down like he is Canelo might just have a chance.
I'm sure this conversation this played out before the canelo/ggg fight got signed. oscar: Canelo, we gotta make the GGG fight. public pressure demands it. canelo: ok patron... I'll take the fight with GGG but I need some assurances before doing this. oscar: no worries, Canelo. I got the ref and judges on the payroll. all you gotta do is to hang in there for 12 rounds. doesnt matter if ggg wins all 12 rounds, you'll get the decision regardless. just stay up for 12 rds, ok amigo? canelo: ok patron...where's my pen? (signs the fight contract)
if he didn't have a punch it would be a road block, but he is the natural middleweight and he is a puncher.. GGG knows what he has to do.. Take over the fight and make it a brawl and let his bigger size win.
Theres always a more appealing narrative that the media can use to sell us something. The biggest start in boxing ducking somebody? People eat that up. Remember Floyd ducking Pac and vise versa? Why is it I and other informed and unbias boxing fans knew since at least May 2016 that Canelo vs GGG was happening Sept 2017? GBP threw out a couple quotes to K2 through media to get things going. At that point GGG needed Canelo more than Canelo needed him. GGG is older and his biggest criticism is his lack of quality resume. No legacy defining fight or true test. The opponents in his division are terribly flawed at the moment. Canelo has many year to go while in his prime and will have other legacy defining fights against the JrMWs and future talent in the years too come. Imo a confident GGG doesnt risk missing out on the Canelo fight, beats or KO and becomes a Mega-Star for doing so. GGG didnt bite on the first offers, it was a risk but it payed off as he got a great deal, good on him.
