He grew up speaking Tagalog, also known as Filipino. Filipino and English are both official languages there along with 19 regional languages. That's sort of like how in India Hindi and English are official languages with 40 something regional dialects. They don't all speak English.
You guys dissing Kovalev & GGG over their attempts at speaking English need to stop . Both fighters are easier to understand any of the Mayweather clan. You cannot understand a word they're saying

Kovalev and Evgeny Gradovich used to live together in house, shack or whatever it was, in the middle of the woods or a forest when they first went over to the US. I can't find the video now but I'm pretty sure that it was isolated and miles away from anywhere.
