I doubt it. A belt does sell but just look at Mayweather vs. Marquez/Mosley/McGregor.
    Pacquiao - Marquez IV.
Jones Jr. - Tarver III(sold more than I and II, and higher gate)

He has to be trolling. Belts don’t mean anything for PPV.

What history? Belts that have been stripped, won from vacancy, or elevated from "regular" to "super?" It's a big deal, no question about it, but for example look at Crawford who just did it; seems like over half of everybody just tries to deuce on the accomplishment anyway. It wasn't going to make him any new fans. Winning a strap off the 10th ranked guy isn't as big of a deal as beating the 5th ranked guy who happened to not have a belt.

Belts get a fighters profile up and going, but thats all there is to it. Golovkin and Alvarez have been in the spotlight for a long time now, they dont need those belts.
Alvarez vs Kirkland, Angulo and Lara were all big fights without a belt on the line. No need for any of them.

The title gimmick is all about records these days. Broner is a perfect example of the fans and media's obsession with winning titles across multiple divisions. Another is Lomachenko winning in the least amount of fights or Joshua/Wilder being the 1st undisputed champion since the WBO was legitimized.

I only just started watching the NBA for the first time since the late 90's and moticed there's now a massive emphasis on accolades, records and rings.

People are just fascinated with shinny things:roto2gaydude:

    Oh absolutely!
People care that Broner has won titles in 4 weight classes, but nobody cared that there was no title on the line for the Garcia fight.
Nobody cared about Garcia fighting Lipinets, but a lot of people cared about the belt.
The emphasis wasn't on Garcia fighting Lipinets because Lipinets was a worthy opponent. The emphasis was on Garcia moving up in weight.

Good shout out for Garcia vs Lipinets, I've never looked at it with that perspective. Liam smith vs Canelo and Oscar vs Sturm are similar cases where the title was more important than the opponent. It'd suck being that guy but at least they get some exposure and paid handsomely.

If he isn’t a champ then what’s the point and what has been the point of his career. A guy like him needs belts because he’s not a money maker without Canelo. He’s not a Floyd or Cotto or Canelo where belts don’t matter. I sense you Golovkin fans don’t think this guy can beat his mandatories and just want him to fight easy fights for the remainder of his career.

It’s funny how as soon as this guy’s career just got difficult his team and even his fans want him to abandon his trademark to what got him here in the first place. It’s gone from fighting anyone from 154 to 168 to All of the belts and now literally has become none of the belts.

he's fighting Canelo, the WBC would strip him if they cared that much. and besides GGG said they'd talk (with Charlo) after his fight with Canelo

The second he drops that belt the quicker the WBC can match Canelo and some poor victim for the vacant strap. All the WBC care about is getting that belt back around Canelo,s waist.

A boxer can only fight one guy at a time. Let’s see how they feel about Charlo after the fight.

They could have fought Charlo or The IBF mando instead they picked a guy a division below on a two year layoff... he has no intention of defending the belts anymore
