Based on Golovkin being the better fighter.

I'm a Golovkin fan as I am a Martinez fan and I have to disagree here. Prime Martinez had serious speed, better stamina and great movement. That type of style could spell doom for an aggressive fighter like Golovkin. Don't forget that Martinez proved his self against the likes of Williams x2, Pavlik, Chavez Jr. and other solid opponents. Golovkin is yet to prove anything major for anyone to say he would beat any version of Martinez. Martinez already dealt with opponents that have serious power and beat them, Golovkin is yet to beat a top class skilled fighter like Martinez with serious movement, speed and power.

I would safely pick Golovkin to stop Martinez now since he's clearly at the end of his career and is looking for some serious PPV money before he eventually fights Golovkin and retires. However, if we're talking prime Martinez, I'll go with Martinez by UD.

Did you stutter the first time? I didn't.
I'll pick the guy who has been fighting all of his life over a former soccer player and bicycle enthusiast, at this level.
It really is remarkable what Martinez has accomplished as a professional fighter. What he's done speaks for itself.
Even "prime" Martinez got punches landed on him. When Golovkin lands punches, it's only a matter of time before it's over.

Just because you have been fighting all of your life doesn't mean you will be the best fighter. You give yourself a good chance at being very good even great at it, but god given ability plays a huge role as well.

Prime Martinez vs. Prime Golovkin is 50-50 imo, based on each of them giving each other issues with their abilities. Golovkin is there to be hit, but he has great ability to cut the ring off from Martinez. Martinez is quicker and accurate. GGG is stronger and accurate as well. GGG's best chance is to get to Martinez is rounds 7-9 while Martinez usually catches his second wind. Martinez best opportunity is to stay on his bike and pot shot Golovkin all night while setting traps on Golovkin's sometime robot like movements.

great interview. abel definitely deserved mention as trainer of the year. i think he's a much better trainer than robert garcia. unfortunately, these 'fighter of the year' and 'trainer of the year' awards are more popularity contests than anything.
