No one seems to have picked up on the fact that Canelo and GGG are the same weight - look at their fight night weights, both come in at around 172 after rehydration... GGG could make 156 without too much trouble, 154 could be an issue but if I were Canelo and I were to fight Golovkin, why not do it at 160 - save himself making the light middleweight limit and ultimately they are going in at the same weight come fight night

That’s a good point, especially when compared to other catch weights like Floyd - Canelo.

The reason why Floyd Canelo was such a problem it resulted in one fighter being weight drained. The reason why Pac-Man Cotto was such a problem was it resulted in one fighter being weight drained. Those issues wouldn’t occur if Canelo vs GGG was at 160, that shouldn’t be a problem for either fighter. Canelo can make 160 without a problem. (Gaining weight is easier than losing weight)

My view is that that Canelo - GGG shouldn’t occur at a catchweight, it should be at 160 like all title fights should be at.

That said, we shouldn’t rush for him to fight GGG right away at 160. When he’s never fought at that weight yet. I think you’ll agree that you don’t want to fight a guy like GGG for your first fight at the MW limit.

Considering all Canelo has done for the sport, the commission should allow Canelo time to decide what to do. A unification fight for the 154-lb titles that Floyd vacated should be next for Canelo. DLH and Golden Boy should be match making right now, for who Canelo should fight for the 154 lb titles.

If Canelo were to win those, then he should have the option to defend his 154 lb titles one time if he wants to before having to put his MW title he won from Cotto on the line. (that’s the luxury that Floyd got since 2013 not having to defend his 154 lb titles so Canelo should be afforded the same luxury)

If he were to recapture those 154-lb titles, then Canelo would probably be able to move up to 160 and still be able to fight again at 154 if he wanted to. (it’s only 6 lbs)

But the idea we heard in the news that Canelo only has 15 days to decide to fight GGG or be stripped of the MW title is ridiculous and disrespectful to Canelo after what he has done in the sport!!

Canelo now is our Middleweight Champ and the un-crowned Jr Middlerweight unified champion! This is Canelo ERA now!

Canelo is his own boss and now it is Canelo time to become two-time 154-lb Champ as Middleweight Champ in the world, THEN have the Right to move up to 160 when he is ready for A Super Mega Fight vs GGG for the Unified MW Champ?? (2017??) Lets let Canelo - GGG buildup!!

Canelo will only get better, and GGG time as MW Champ is running out!! Think about it...One day soon Canelo can hold all 154 lb titles and THEN all MW titles by beating GGG! Canelo ERA is NOW!

    :hey

Fight GGG at 160 or drop the belt.

Golovkin already agreed to step aside for the Cotto-Canelo fight.
    Thats enough.

GGG is the one that needs this fight...not Canelo. In terms of strategy Canelo should NOT concede on the weight for GGG. GGG should see if he can negotiate a couple of extra pounds higher...maybe meet at 157. But, GGG has few bargaining chips here. He should just move down and fight. Time to pay some dues to become great.

GGG can say 160 or nothing. The WBC will strip Canelo if he doesn't agree with GGG terms of the fight. Weight cannot be controlled by the champion in a WBC mandatory fight.

If Canelo doesn't accept the weight that GGG wants he might say no fight then and if that happens Canelo will be striped causing GGG to be elevated to full WBC champion.

ok, really... the fact that Canelo is able to make 155 and rehydrate back to 175 sometimes, doesn't mean GGG can do the same.
Age is an important factor in this, and there were rumors that Canelo has trouble making that weight himself.
If it was easy for both, and wouldn't bother GGG at all, why would Canelo even go trough the trouble?!

It's not easy and it's only meant to cripple Golovkin, who doesn't have to comply.
If Canelo refuses 160, GGG becomes the champion... easy

I've always said it; if they fight at 160, Canelo will outweigh GGG on fight night. The issue was never weight. Canelo, like most middleweight, simply want to wait until GGG gets old or injured and pull off a Cotto vs Martinez.

Or they could just fight at middleweight but you know, what ever.

According to Boxrec Canelo is the #1 middleweight in the world. Canelo can't have it both ways.

Canelo is the boss. So, really it's where he wants it. If other guys can move up or down to make superfights, surely GGG can.

He's the WBC MW champ who fought for a MW belt knowing that Golovkin was the mandatory. He needs to defend against Golovkin or GTFO of 160lbs. If it is going to be Canelo's time, then he needs to prove it in the ring. :firedevi:

Why should Canelo be stripped of not fighting GGG immediately when Floyd wasn’t stripped for not defending his two 154-lb titles for over 2 years?

This 154 title was on the line for maidana. The WBC had Floyd put the 147 and 154 WBC titles on the line for that fight. It was a weird move on the WBC's part.

Canelo signed a contract to fight GGG next if he won the WBC title and wanted to keep it.

This. Tired of this nonsense. The middleweight title should be fought for at 160 pounds, not a catchweight.
