Why are people assuming Kovalev is better than Golovkin and using it as a measuring stick? Golovkin handled Kovalev in sparring. Golovkin is better than him imo.

I think the best Golovkin would beat the best Ward.

Sullivan Barrera learned a lot from Golovkin at his camp. I wonder how he’d call this one.

Ward wins 7 rounds to 5

I'm a big fan of both

Before Ward retired this was my dream fight as a Golovkin fan, I actually held out hope that it may have come off somehow, sad it never happened.

I think people are writing GGG off here too quickly although admittedly favouring Ward here does make the most sense. Golovkin has more strings to his bow than Kovalev (who for all the criticism is matched 1-1 with Ward) and boasts strengths suited to aid a move up in weight, namely chin and power. I have always favoured Ward myself but I see it as very close and any victory would be extremely hard won.

To those saying Ward is a "stylistic nightmare" for Golovkin, could you explain why this is the case and name examples of the reverse?
Given Ward's spoiling reputation coupled with his level of talent I see him as being a nightmare opponent for anybody.

Ward would pitch a shutout...I do think G may have a good enough chin to survive but definitely out of his element

This would've been an incredible fight, and I wish it went down.
Although I pick Golovkin, I'm probably 55% sure of it.
Ward was a brilliant fighter and it would be a huge task for G.

Andre Ward had the mental toughness of a proven winner. He
hasn't lost a fight since he was 12. Ward was a cerebral fighter and
yes he might use dubious methods but that what's a great fighter will
do to overcome obstacles . Ward on pts.

I think your last line sums it up, nicely.

I am not sure Ward can be assigned with any one particular style. Seems to me that, over time, he has demonstrated a few, as well as proven to adapt to his opponents during fights. Moreover, his ability to keep his opponents guessing, combined with his timing and anticipation, are a punishment to those who are driven to come forward, aggressively.

Golovkin, who is essentially a pressure fighter, is just that kind of come-forward fighter. And, he's looked less impressive when facing any kind of sustained control of distance and/or movement by his opponents.

When you consider the above and that Ward is a bigger and substantially better version of anything Golovkin has ever faced before, it's really no surprise that Ward might be seen as the consenus favorite in this one.

Agreed that Ward sees him off convincingly I'm not sure how you can argue with that but after all that was said and never happened, I'd be curious to know whether Ward could have come down to 164 considering how comfortably he moved to 175.

Because Kovalev is better than GGG in certain area's.

Heavier handed , harder to get to , rangier. He's harder to beat than GGG for any 160/168 pounder. Both Canelo and Jacobs would be destroyed by him and he'd probably beat Golovkin too.

Ward had a torrid time trying to get into Krusher's wheelhouse , he wouldn't have that problem with the easy to hit GGG.
Ward had the speed , movement and athleticism to get off first on every exchange and would follow up with chopping hooks all over Golovkins body and head.
Golovkin could be mauled and brawled on the inside or get outboxed from range.

It would have been a demoralizing drubbing for GGG and thats why he wanted no part of the fight when it was on the table.

Ward wins a decision. Without seeing GGG at 168, it's hard to really call because we don't know how it'd affect him. I do think it would be a competitive fight tough for sure.

Well it's definitely a points decision that's for sure, because they both have great chins, especially golovkin. That guy's chin is made out of steel I'm sure.

As for the fight, I have ward winning. Ward seems to be very good against fighters who come forward, and with him being the bigger man at super-middleweight, I don't think GGG can bully him and pressure him as much as he would normally to most fighters. The problem is, even if GGG pressures him against the ropes, Ward's size advantage can easily allow him to get out of those situations. GGG would have to adapt and I don't think the current, bulky golovkin can do that. Bare in mind he'd lose even more movement at super-middleweight and he's already slow enough. He relies on the pressure style to make up for lack of movement.

The young, agile and lighter golovkin would have a much better chance against ward.

I see ward winning 10 rounds to 2. But a less bulky, young golovkin makes it an interesting fight. If he was less muscular, I see ward still winning but only just, 7 rounds to 5 for ward.

Good post. I like Golovkin a lot but this is pretty much how I see it.
