Golovkin likes to mix his stuff up. He should throw a couple to the body, see how well Canelo counters and then fake a couple to try counter his counter. He needs to keep him guessing. Canelo is too good defensively when he gets comfortable with what's incoming. If GGG can introduce a bit of doubt as to what's coming next that in itself can disrupt Canelo's autopilot defence. I remember Canelo didn't like getting hit with Golovkin's "skull compactor" punch at all. He should try a bit more unorthodox stuff in between the textbook offense.

GGG's ring iq is very good. He knows he has lost a step in the speed department and he knows the qualities of Canelo, that's why imo he chose not to go the body. I was a tad worried in the very late rounds, even though G was coming forward, it looked like Canelo was the one with the power left and the one that could maybe do the hurting.

The late rounds were pretty close, but Golovkin still threw and landed more. To me GGG never looked bothered by Canelo's shots. The only round that was even stevens wrt punches landed was 12 iirc. I think that Canelo's slump mid-rounds is what made him look that much better, relatively speaking, in the last 3. Right at the end of the 12th Golovkin was chasing and throwing bombs at Canelo.

It's hard to be even stevens wrt punches landed when you only get credit for 1 jab landed when you actually land 7-13 jabs like in round 8, or when the live stats have you outlanding your opponent by 4-5 punches like in round 5 then post fight it says you were outlanded by 4-5.

FYI the official numbers had Alvarez outlanding Golovkin 14-12 in round 2, Golovkin outlanding Alvarez 15-13 in round 3 (Alvarez 3 more power punches landed), and Golovkin outlanding Alvarez 16-15 in round 6 (Golovkin outlanding Alvarez by 4 power punches). It's hard though to take these numbers seriously when you have jab landed discrepancies like in the 8th round. Could you believe that Alvarez only got credit for 1 jab landed in the 8th?

    I’m with you
GGG failed to cut the ring and had no backup plan for the movement of Big Red
Canelo by a clear win unless GGG changes his whole plan for this fight

Hard one to call. I think GGG is absolutely the better of the two. He was robbed the first fight.
Will it happen again? Can Canelo make adjustments to squeak a legit decision? Does GGG have a revenge mindset?
I forsee one of two scenarios. GGG destroys him to prove a point. Or, GGG slows down a bit and Canelo adjusts just enough to put it in the judges hands.

Smart fighters don't follow their opponents whilst getting clobbered with clean hard punches continually.

Golovkin's success came when Canelo got winded, when Canelo got his second wind he was once again outgunned in rounds 10-12.

Canelo cant improve, in the 1st fight the Mexicans best rounds were at the very start and very end. He already had the plan to beat Golovkin which is why he started so well. What he soon found out though that he could not keep doing what he was doing so well, Golovkin punches too hard, he couldnt keep countering GGG like he did so fantasticly at the start he was taking too much punishement which is why countered less and less and went mobile instead and started losing the rounds. He preserved himself, chose his moments more carefuly and put on a spurt at the end. He even landed an absolute monster of a punch of Golovkin and it made very little impact.

I just cant see what Canelo can improve on. Golovkin this time rounds can improve before the fight even starts, he can demand some drug testing for the Mexican, he can demand more scrutiny at the weigh in, cuz there was something dodgy there and he can demand some neutral judges. During the fight he can try go to the body more and try put the pressure on the Mexican earlier, easier said than done ofcourse.

I think this will be a close decision victory for Golovkin. Eyes will be on the scoring, there will be some background pressure for a bit more fairness and consistancy from the judges after that joke last time. 1st fight was close cuz Canelo is so damn good but Golovkin won that and will win the rematch too.

Canelo is the better of the two. GGG is very basic and fought Canelo in a straight line. Canelo will win this time and without controversy.

Why? If he does the same thing in the rematch, and the judges are fair, he'll probably win again. Let's not get carried away with the Kovalev-Ward scenario, its not like Canelo and De la Hoya are as adept at playing mind games, and Canelo isn't a master at making adjustments, he still can't fight counter punchers or "runners" as he calls them, so he avoids them altogether. People like to think inside the box, until a scenario comes along that shakes their confidence and makes them think outside of it, however the reverse can be true as well, people can start applying outside the box scenarios to everything, when in fact they should be thinking inside the box. I tend to zig when everybody zags, well I think everyone is buying the hype and are zagging, well, I'm zigging.:deal: And no that's not reflexively. Everyone is trying to be clever here, and preparing for the Canelo blowout based on the propaganda instilled reimagining of the first fight, well facts are facts, and fans should use logic and reason instead of cynically buying into a false narrative.

What can Canelo possibly do in the rematch that he didn't do the first time around? If he chooses to slug it out with GGG a little more, he runs the risk of being KO'd, if he fights off the backfoot looking to land counters, GGG still in all likelihood walks through everything he throws and outworks him, if he doesn't take the middle rounds off that allowed him to close strong the first time, he runs a huge risk of gassing and being KO'd late.

Whereas all GGG needs to do is use a little more lateral movement and dig right hooks into the ribs and side of Canelo's head to improve his performance. GGG has far less improvements he needs to make than Canelo, since after all, remember.... GGG won the first fight 115-113 or 116-112. If he makes that one little subtle adjustment, it'll be 116-112 or 117-113. Or yes, a KO.

    I like this post.
I could see an argument for either winning the first fight. I wouldnt have disputed which way it went. I think it depends on what you like seeing.
