So sparring partners did not like to spar with Carlos Monzon, they say he hit too hard. This is when he was in New York preparing for the Tony Licata fight, on June 30 1975, Monzon won by TKO 10. Buddy McGirt said, Carlos Was One Bad Dude, He Could Hit. I do not see him losing to the likes of GGG or Canelo Alvarez.
I don't see him losing outside of his prime to anyone at 160. Monzon was slow, but he could time you better than anyone. He also had fantastic use of range, his jab in particular. That lovely straight right hand and his great chin + stamina would drag him through anyone at 160 bar perhaps Hagler but even that is a tossup.
That hype of 2013-2015 has come back to haunt Golovkin. Comparisons with Hagler and Monzon were silly. His best win - a narrow victory over Danny Jacobs - was hardly a statement. Rodrigo Valdez's KO over Bennie Briscoe will go down as more impressive than any GGG win. This is not blind criticism. Golovkin was unfairly made to wait for a title shot, turned pro too late, but then he was never fast, rather hittable, and ultimately lacked a certain spice when I think of the truly great middles in full flow. Aged or not, if Jacobs and Canelo can make life difficult, Monzon would make it miserable.
Excellent post Richard. I thought you might have an opinion on this. We are seeing a few recycled threads over the last month or two. Usually the same posters banging egos too. For what it's worth, I really rate Golovkin and reckon he was ducked in his more dangerous years. Monzon v Golovkin would have been one for the ages. Golovkin would never be the same after it either because his brilliant best still wouldn't quite be enough.
It's a legit question if you're genuinely wondering who's going to win. Heck even if it's a one off troll - you can have benefit of the doubt. But this guy used to make threads hating on GGG constantly calling him a hypejob, bum basher whatever. So obviously he didn't rate GGG AT ALL. And then comes out with GGG-Hagler or GGG-Monzon. At some point the trolling becomes annoying, there's a reason why I singled this guy out in my comment.
And for some reason, I am not allowed to start a thread, I could post some interesting ones if given a chance, I have never been banned, someday I will be given a chance. Something about insufficient privileges.
I've never heard something like that. Maybe a mod could help you out? @McGrain @CST80 @IntentionalButt @Serge
lol how ??? its 6 years ago and hes past prime hanging around for the Canelo Loot. Hes not the best at 160 and hasn't been for sometime, hes slipped and its given the people that were waiting the chance to beat him now..Canelo's picking his way snidely
Golovkin is a very good fighter, but he ain't beating Carlos Monzon in a 15 round fight. This baby would get ugly in the later rounds when Monzon stops him in the 14th. I'm not sure GGG gets by R. Valdez at 160 either
