That lineage is clear but I don't think it really matters when 90% of people with boxing knowledge consider Golovkin the best in the division. I think that is what really matters. I don't think lineage should be the be-all and end-all. Cotto might never fight GGG so that cheapens it. You mentioned Garcia but many people thought he lost to Herrera and we don't know if Provodnikov would beat him because that fight might never happen because of boxing politics. Similar situation at 175.
It would depend entirely on what weight GGG fought Canelo. I think Canelo would have to go to MW to make that happen.
To the people who say Cotto is the "kingpin" at MW: who do you think the best middleweight in the world is?:think
Cotto is the lineal champion at MW. He beat the man (Martinez) who beat the man (Pavlik) who beat the man (Taylor).
You do realize Hopkins won all 4 belts, they where stripped and given up along the way, but it traces back to Hopkins being the undisputed champ. Most organizations don't work with each over Martinez was stripped off the WBO title for choosing to keep his WBC belt. And Pirog and Jacobs fought over it.
It's hard to pick who the best at the moment is. All four titles are held by four different fighters and none have significant victories worth bragging about except for Cotto(who beat the main man in the division despite Sergio's clearly washed up status). I will have to say the winner of the Golovkin-Quillin fight should be rated #1 in terms of physical/natural ability in the division and due to the fact that both WBA and WBO titles are on the line. Officially however, Cotto will remain #1 unless proven otherwise in the ring.
Those titles where not lost in the ring though that is the point I am getting at. Hopkins - Taylor - Pavlik - Martinez -Cotto They where stripped or given up a long the way. They where won in vacant titles fights, thus who ever beat the previous true champ became the champ.
Cotto will get bashed up by a current middle who isn't shot like se.xy.... Cotto wouldn't beat Canelo at 154
no doubt cotto's top priority is to take on the recognized best middleweight, golovkin asap. he'll be calling him out any day now.
and when he was stripped of the WBC title he called out Zbik saying he wanted it back, then Chavez after their fight was announced but wanted no part of Pirog for his other former belt. Then fought Barker who was utterly unknown and his best win Spada while refusing to fight Pirog because he was supposedly unknown. Wasn't an issue when the opponent was Zbik or Barker only for Pirog and Golovkin later on.
