This fight shouldnt even be an option for golovkin. A 50 year old coming off a loss who competes two divisions higher. Ive never really seen golovkin say he wants this fight, so until its signed i think in depth discussion over it is a waste of time. Will be extremely disappointing if G does take it... but i dont think he will.
Agreed. Although I can't say that it WON'T be some degree of a test, I don't see the point as he won't get credit by making Hopkins come down, especially at age 50, and also the damage should he lose will be monumental. Hopkins has been the ultimate trap fight. All the danger and not enough of the credit.
Can't find anything about such a fight on the Net anywhere...............Golovkin to come up 15 lbs.?
This has to be a rumor, this fight is lame at 168 or 268. This is worse than Mayweather - Berto. Hopkins is 50 years old and 9-5-1 since 2005. He didn't win a round in his last fight, and almost got knocked into the first row in the last round. GGG really needs new management.
Sold on GGG how, exactly? I think he's clearly the best boxer in the world at 160 right now, and I'd favor him to beat anyone at 160 right now. But 160 isn't a powerhouse division at the moment, and GGG has yet to face or defeat anyone of real note. He's consistent, and he has power and a good ring IQ. If I was him, I'd stay at 160 and stay busy, and eventually land big fights at 160. I wouldn't move up if I were him, because he's perfectly suited for 160 in my opinion. He has my respect already. But he is nowhere near the level of Kovalev in terms of accomplishment, and despite what his fan boys say, he doesn't hit as hard as Klitschko. :smoke
In fairness, you can argue that Hopkins was 13-2-0 over that stretch. The only fights he clearly lost were against Dawson and Kovalev. :smoke
Yes, and I'd say... Would you take any of the opponents GGG has faced to beat Hopkins, even at 50. The answer is probably no... Which says more about Hopkins than anything. He deserves respect for doing what he's been doing for 25 years
Good points Rummy. I just want the Ward - GGG fight so bad. Then he can go back to 160 if it was an unsuccessful venture.
:deal A very fair assessment of GGG, I'd say. I'd only add that he has good boxing skills and a good defense, considering his aggressive persuasion... And of course that he's never really been tested in the pros, which you indirectly said.
This is a bad fight and if PPV i am not buying. Hops is an ATG legend, but yesterday's, well, last decades news. GGG fighting him is stupid and not interesting whatsoever, but I can see hops beating him. Its not a worth while fight for GGG, hops could make him look BAD and he doesn't need to mess with that at this stage of his career.
