Those guys all went the distance with Toney, some of them giving him all sorts of problems en route. But Golovkin gets stopped?
That was not at middleweight. I repeat: THAT WAS NOT AT MIDDLEWEIGHT. Toney was better at higher weights.
If Toney could stop cruisers and Heavies, common sense should tell you he would have done so at Middleweight.
And yet the facts say differently: Glenn Wolfe, Dave Tiberi, Mike McCallum, Reggie Johnson, Merqui Sosa, Sanderline Williams, Danny Thomas, Ron Admunsen, Lemark Davis, Arthur Willis etc were not stopped at MW and Tiberi actually beat him.
It's all dependent on what version of James shows up. An in-shaped and focused Toney should be able to beat him. He can stand in the pocket and evade shots with ease, his reflexes and timing on his counterpunches were the very best in the sport during the early to mid 90's (I think even superior to Pernell.) He was also heavy handed, had good handspeed, great footwork, elite level defense and a terrific chin. So basically, an in shape and focused version of Toney at 160 lbs would be a hard out for anyone in the history of the sport. He was so naturally gifted, he just didn't take his training seriously nor kept himself conditioned between fights.
Let's assume that what you wrote is true for the sake of argument. That means an inconsistent fighter with a great win is always going to be better than a consistent fighter with a string of solid wins below the level of that great win in these fantasy matchups. I don't agree with that.
Using bet twice in the span of three words to set up a lame punch line. LOOL Now that's one guy who never lets the dogmatic nuances of speech constrain his infantile thought processes.
Fact is that Toney was in shape in his biggest fights at middleweight. So it is safe to assume he would have been in shape against GGG.Toney had a habit to train to the level of his opponent.
So we're talking: 1 His win over Reggie Johnson where he was KD in the process 2 His draw with McCallum 3 His UD win with McCallum 2 4 His win over Nunn where he actually got pasted for most of the fight. That's pretty much it. The best wins Toney had at MW, and they weren't all that convincing. McCallum and Nunn I think were pretty good, so props there. But this record in no way suggests to me that at MW Toney is somehow heavily favoured to TKO Golovkin. Hells no.
He would be favoured to win against GGG, in my opinion. It would be a great fight and might very well go the distance.GGG is a HOF himself who has serious skills and power. When said TKO, I was thinking more of some of Toney's super middlweight when he beat up Barkley , Littles and williams.Toney improved a bit as a super middle. So you may have a point there.
