Nunn gave him a pasting until he gassed.

If Golovkin drew with THIS GUY:

... we'd never hear the end of it. But because Toney drew with him, I bet it means that he beats Golovkin :stirrpot

He's so comfortable in the pocket too. A lot of fighters succumb to GG due to the cumulative effect of constantly feeling the pressure. But Toney could almost read a book while dealing with a pressure fighter up close. He wouldn't back away and allow GG to cut off the ring and control the distance. In fact, the opposite. He'd stand his ground, welcome him in with open arms and counter him all night....

Yes, Nunn was beating him up before the stoppage.

Ah, that would technically count as a middleweight fight. So yes, another implication Toney struggled against pressure at MW.

... except of course, if the fighter has a three-letter nickname. Then that dude lights him up like a pearball. Tiberi/Toney has to be one of the worst robberies I ever saw.

He went life and death and arguably lost to a guy with a glass jaw who no one here rated and said would be brutally stopped. That's what happened.

I like GGG but this is the reason I'm not a fan, the man's best win was a very close fight with Jacobs and hasn't fought an elite/prime fighter. Toney on the other hand was a proven fighter that fought the best of his era and has an iron chin.

"Toney could almost read a book while dealing with a pressure fighter up close"

What the hell is this based on? Where are these fights with Toney easily dealing with pressure at MW....any weight?

Who is this mythical middleweight James Toney that pitches shut outs and laughs off pressure?

People tend to remember all the times Toney looked great - often above MW - and forget his performances where he looked very ordinary.

With GGG, they remember that one good shot that that guy landed hyuk, hyuk!

Golovkin isn't just some pressure fighter, he's got ATG footwork, a top shelf jab and an entire arsenal of punches backed by huge power. The only thing he doesn't have is blistering speed. Transplant him into Tiberi's place and Stevens would finally have a use for that casket he was dragging about.

You'll be an exception then, a lot of casuals don't really know the best boxers of 20 years ago or thereabouts, except maybe Lennox Lewis.

Which is good, because then we can discuss the question in more detail.

Do you think GGG outboxes Toney and UDs him, or KOs him? Yes, it was a faded Holyfield, and he lost valiantly to Samuel Peter, but I imagine that GGG would have got beaten up by those fighters.

My opinion is that Toney has the chin to take GGG's power and it therefore goes to a decision which Toney wins. I think Toney did have great skills, e.g. http://imgur.com/gallery/dFdsN was one of his best performances.

And, a slightly different argument, could GGG go up to heavyweight and have the success that Toney did? I just can't see it to be honest.

    Two disclaimers:
    - Toney was notoriously inconsistent. GGG has had bad nights too, but not nearly as frequently. This assumes we get the best version of Toney.
    - As you may know, I'm a big GGG fan. But can't see how to favour him here. That's not saying he can't win, but I can't see how I could pick him.

Nunn is light years better than anyone GGG has ever fought.:deal: What's your point?

Did you watch that Tiberi-Toney fight?

Has Golovkin EVER looked a quarter as bad? Seriously?

Ah, but that's a different argument. Toney had a style more suited to outsmarting big, slower guys. Golovkin would have to go toe-to-toe with them which probably wouldn't work out nearly as well. That doesn't mean Toney > Golovkin.

Toney has a CV littered with fighters in or above GG's class. GG has never fought anyone as good as Toney. You don't want to go digging through resumes or specific past fights if you want to make a case for GG...

Toney has a CV also littered with his struggles to win against fighters far below Golovkin's class :deal:

Oh hell no...man, Mike Tyson and Oscar. Nobody remembers that big fairy. lol Just playing.

I don't like this question. You don't have to "outbox" someone to decision them.

Are we matching these guys at MW or at HW? If Toney comes in with a 60 pound weight advantage...

This is like picking Willie Pastrano to beat Mayweather at Welter weight, because I imagine Harold Johnson would take Mayweather's head off.

It goes to the decision, and Golovkin should win.

    Barkley fight wasn't at middle.

    Why is that a factor?

He was consistent at not being a dominant middleweight.
