You got me I'm guilty of not reading the thread closely, It's not that great of an example anyway, the Toney that went to war that night was past prime and that fight was a resurgence of sorts Bottom line the question is who wins and I think Toney at his best will pick G apart and I am a fan of both
To be fair, you are comparing a 35 year old Golovkin to a 22-23 year old James Toney. In contrast to his contemporary peers, Golovkin was an incredibly active Champion, squeezing 11 fights in 3 years from from Proska to Lemieux. Not bad for being 31-33 years old. Now he's finally settled down into the 2-3 fight pattern of everyone else though. Toney does deserve huge credit for being one of the most active fighters of the 90s, he's very much a throwback in that regard. That's just how he likes to do things it seems. McCallum was very active too.
not disputing this at all. He had quirks and lethargy that allowed opponents that shouldn't have a chance to have a chance
Is this the James Toney that was using horse steroids? Which pretty much helped him move up in weight and stay competitive? Yes it is.
Good post. I agree. Everyone's circumstances are different. It's just that when giving an opinion, I'd rather base it purely on how I think their styles would mesh, rather than taking into account who was the more dominant at the weight. GG being the more dominant MW of the 2, isn't really relevant in my opinion. I take on board that he was also busier when he was younger, but again, I just don't see how he'd have been so dominant, had he have fought the fighters that Toney did.
A 32 year old Golovkin would not be able to keep a 22 year old Toney's schedule in 1991 and 1992. I think if you dropped peak Golovkin in 91, he would have just took three or four fights and not bothered with a few of those busy ones Toney took. Sosa, Nunn, Johnson, and probably McCallum in 92 or late 91 as Toney did. I think Golovkin stops Sosa and Nunn. Johnson and McCallum I think feel Golovkin's power but get edged on points. I don't see the older McCallum taking Golovkin to a draw. I just don't.
You could drop GG anywhere in Toney's MW career. I don't think he'd be as dominant as he is today. Stylistically, Nunn could have caused him huge trouble. I can't see GG beating an early 90's version of Mike on points. He was still elite at that stage.
No-one knocks out Toney. Absolutely no-one. GGG couldn't KO Jacob's, that tells you something. He punches hard but not hard or accurate enough. Toney also has a great defense. Toney by decision or stoppage.
