Well we don't know but we have the eye test, that Nunn had some of his best performances and had his best wins during 87-91 period. It's clear Nunn during mid 90s wasn't the same fighter, that's not an excuse that's common knowledge.
I agree the likes of Bivol, Beterbiev, are better than Tiozzo, but there's no evidence to suggest Golovkin would beat Tiozzo at Light Heavyweight at 40 years old. Golovkin looked lackluster and had his worst performance vs Canelo at Super Middleweight, there's no evidence to suggest that Golovkin would be effective at Light Heavyweight. And again i don't see how McCallum losing to Tiozzo two weight classes above what were discussing at age 40, is in anyway relevant to how McCallum does at Middleweight at 35 years old. I never made out he was some unbeatable god like RJJ or Tyson looked in their prime, but he was a highly skilled Middleweight who beat plenty of top names like Graham x2, Barkley, McCallum, Collins, and was only stopped once in 64 fights by Michael Nunn, so Nunn rightly deserves alot of credit for the victory, it was one of the most stunning KO's in Middleweight history.
So you admit defeat then....... just kidding I was hoping we could atleast get this to 100 pages before we stopped.
You'd pick the best versions of Murray, Geale and/or Murata over the best version of Nunn? If so, no disrespect, but wow. @Dynamicpuncher I rate GGG #13 all time at MW based on fights contested at or around that weight only, which I should imagine is substantially higher than you, but please note not all people who rank GGG higher than you have views as extreme as this. As for the thread question, I voted Toney. Hes a bad style match up for GGG. I think it would be a competitive decision in a bout that was much closer than I suspect most imagine.
I don't have a problem with you ranking him as 13, I just don't think Golovkin is top 10, due to his poor opposition despite his many title defences. Because as you know the Middleweight division is such a deep division with alot of amazing fighters. My biggest gripe is that people think fighters like Geale, Murray, Murata, etc. Would have a chance vs a prime Michael Nunn, and Mike McCallum. And to me that is absolute madness in all honesty, both Nunn and McCallum were at a much higher level than either of those fighters.
I'm not a historian to give Golovkin a place on All-Time list, that I'll leave to more knowledgable people than me - but I rate Golovkin quite highly, I picked Toney - because just like @Greg Price99 and others earlier in this thread - I see it as very bad style match-up for GGG, where Golovkin's lack of speed would really hurt him. One thing that is clear to me is that Toney competed in much stronger, talent-rich middleweight era. Golovkin's legacy mainly comes down to his 2 fights with Canelo at middleweight and fight with Jacobs. I think all 3 of those fights could've gone either way. I think matching those two of Gennady's opponents with Nunn is fair, other than that, Golovkin's opposition should be rather compared to the likes of Dell'Aquilla or Dave Tiberi on James's record (To be fair, Toney lost to Tiberi so on his night - in bad sense - He could lose to Martin Murray and Daniel Geale too).
You’re asking if GGG can beat Toney? Cmon. GGG would be just another name in different eras an opponent type.
Golovkin isn't beating Toney. He's too straightforward and overly reliant on the jab. When (not if) Toney takes his jab away and starts countering him, blasting away at the body, and starts to land 4-6 piece combinations, Golovkin would either try to slug it out or go in his shell like he did in the 3rd Canelo fight (more probable). Toney by UD.
You know you're talking about an almost 40-year old McCallum at LHW, right? This is Mendoza level. Is it something that comes over every GGG fan?
No. I am/was a GGG fan & rank him #13 all time at MW, higher than most knowledgeable historians would, but I wouldn't try to claim a win over a 40-year old McCallum at LHW was anything other than irrelevant to a discussion about either GGG's all time standing or how he'd do in a fantasy fight prime for prime vs James Toney.
