You know, people are prone to certain cognitive biases. In your case you are biased towards Toney, because you are aware of all his accomplishments in the ring. If Toney didn`t have the chance to have all this great fights in the first place, he would remain unproven and far from being the boxing legend, right? Now you try to compare the fighter whose credentials you are very well aware of with the fighter who is just on the verge of becoming a star. Certainly, I can understand why you are biased this way, because Golovkin jumped into world boxing fans consciousness just 2 years ago and seemingly out of nowhere.
Well, I am biased towards Golovkin exactly because I was aware of his skills and heard all this legends of him for a long time, since he first became world champion in the amateurs. Soviet school of boxing was on par with Cuban school and more successful than American. Prize fighting was prohibited by commies, but if there were soviet pro boxing, I am sure that it would`ve been on par with American, to say the least. Inside Soviet boxing schools there were many different traditions, with Russian, Ukranian and Kazakhstani being the richest. This tradition still continues, and there are many pro boxers from these three countries. Golovkin is the best ever boxer in the rich tradition of Kazakstani boxing, but whats more he is currently the best boxer in the bigger tradition of Soviet school. Tszyu, Kovalev, Jirov and every other boxer or trainer from Russia and Kazakhstan would quickly name Golovkin, when asked who is the best pro boxer of Soviet descent.
