Apologies if another post about GGG is annoying, but my curiosity piqued while reviewing the comments in the GGG vs Hagler thread. The majority of the responses favor Hagler over GGG (Including mine, based on Hagler's body of work compared to GGG's at this present time). Since Monzon is commonly ranked the #1 ATG MW over Hagler's #2 standing by the good folks here, what would be the outcome of a brawl between Monzon and today's MW boogie man, GGG?
I haven't watched enough Monzon. But I suspect that Golovkin will not have an easy fight of it. Monzon was a ringmaster with a punishing jab. Golovkin is also not particularly hard to clip with a quick punch. On the other hand Golovkin also has a good jab and excellent footwork. I see this fight as being a battle of the jabs and of footwork. Monzon will try tie GGG up on the inside and / or keep him at the end of his jab. Golovkin will try and get in midrange where he is so deadly and uncork something big. If Golovkin is clever he will work the body to try and sap Monzon late. Honestly I think Monzon will probably win a UD in a chessmatch of a fight, but I'm not counting Golovkin out either. He has a superb punch selection and lots of little tricks himself.
King Carlos has 2-3 inches in height and likely that or more in reach. For a guy that specialized in "Fighting Tall" and keeping people off him I think he has too many angles, timing and distance tools available for Triple G to overcome. I also don't see Triple G outworking him... So I guess I see this going something like the Monzon vs Bennie Brisco fight but maybe closer on the cards and if Triple G gets to him I think he might be a better finisher than Bad Bennie, who as I recall landed a real shot late in his second fight fight with Monzon. I would pay to see this fight, but I gotta think the smart money is on the King.
Honestly I was never impressed with Monzon but GGG hasn't fought anyone close to the skill level of Monzon's opponents. Monzon UD
I like and respect Triple G, but I happen to completely agree with BCS8's assessment. It's plainly obvious no one gets knocked out here either.
No one gets knocked out, and GGG gets thoroughly outboxed and out generaled over the distance.....and Golovkin is probably my favorite current fighter.
Golovkin's 'Predator' style would be tailor made for Monzon, who'd most likely rack up round after round, towards a wide UD. Although, the probability of Monzon stopping Golovkin is greater than some might think.
altho not impressed wth Monzon myself, GGG is not the caliber fighter (not enough tools) to push him past his limits of endurance. GGG is more physical than anything else Monzon jabs, grabs, and 1-2s his way to another boring points win
