HBO wants ratings. Chavez is a proven TV draw. They will air Chavez against just about anyone because his following will tune in.
It was a small show in the first week of September with little promo build up, it wasn't expected to get great ratings.
HBO rejecting every fight. Might as well fight on Showtime. It's only fighters who have legions of fans who can cherry pick these days and HBO won't refuse.
I have never understood how a television network playing matchmaker can benefit boxing. Good match making is the heart and soul of great boxing.
Does HBO still want Pirog? He was Golovkin's original opponent before he pulled out with his back problems.
i agree, but no one knew who Proksa was....at least not in the u.s. unless you are a die hard boxing fan
that fight had a lot of potential. Perhaps GGG will now fight a top 5 MW. There are plenty of fights at MW, including one next year against Sergio if GGG can beat a "name" MW to set it up. Now, GGG vs. Sergio, would be interesting.
I doubt they want to put him in with another unknown non-american again. Ooziwhateverther**** is barely known by most hardcore fans. And I don't think highly of him the only reason this is a somewhat interesting fight is because of the size difference. Hbo clearly want to build GGG up and putting him in with fighters without the slightest name recognition isn't going to do that. Even though it might not be a good fight a fight vs Taylor would do wonders for his exposure.
Agreed. Except I think its Martinez they are building him up for. GGG is a small mw to begin with and Ward will be at 175 in a year or two probably.
And without those networks making money getting ratings they would be out of business and we will be listening to boxing on the radio. Or every little fight being PPV. And people talking about how great showtime us seem to forget they rejected Bute vs Froch!!!!!!
