You really think Chavez and Golovkin should be on PPV? Most people don't even know who Golovkin is because he has not fought anyone yet. It should be on HBO at worst or even ESPN.

Not saying it should be on PPV but it isn't fair to say he really isn't known. Yeah he probably isn't heard of by casuals but more and more are taking notice. Having the third highest rate fight last year is starting to say a lot about how he's starting to attract people. We know Stevens wasn't bringing in anybody. I do think he needs that marquee name on his resume first before he's put on PPV.

Does anyone know why Team Quillin rejected this fight?

    i think its obvious Cisco.

they have marketed quillin as the "undefeated American middleweight 'champion'"

losing his wbo belt to ggg would mean schaefer , al haymon and showtime's stephen espinoza will not have the belt anymore.

also, quillin knows deep down he would lose to ggg.

Its all relative to the size of the investment. PAC was not considered successful by PAC standards, and because the purses for PAC-Rios were like 3x or 4x the combined purses of JMM and Bradley or even more. 3x the investment, 20% more sales. Just like a GGG/JR bout would cost less than 1/4 of say a Floyd/Khan bout but I would be floored if Floyd/Khan outsold it h2h by more than 20% - and GGG/JR would still make money, though maybe not as much as if it was not competing h2h.

And I think you are stretching a bit with your estimation of the anticipation for the JMM/Bradley fight, and a FOTY type war was not what any of the boxing media were predicting. Nor did the fight have any other particular significance. It was just a regular old competitive high level fight, and it was a success. If you think the public demand and anticipation for JMM/Bradley was anything but a minute fraction of the anticipation for GGG/JR then I think you are way off base.

We weren't talk about size of the investment or relative success in this part of the conversation though, but purely buys. That was a better fight and match-up on paper than the vast majority of premium PPV main events in the last 2-3 years and did worse on that measure than all of them.

Both guys had come off of FOTY type performances, and if that fight between two top P4P fighters lacked significance, I'd certainly be curious to hear where you think that aspect comes from in Golovkin-Chavez.

Likewise I think you're vastly overestimating the interest in Golovkin-Chavez; Chavez's ratings as a TV draw have been on a decline since Rubio. He may not be losing viewers as quickly as his gate appeal has declined, but he's not an overwhelming free TV draw anymore either.

Which makes me wonder why he rejected $12-$17+ mln for 2 fights...

Probably because he thinks he can get a better deal on the open market, which may or may not be inaccurate, and doesn't want to freely bind himself from getting there.

Actually when the convo started my point was that Arum could screw over Mayweather/SHO and still make money - even if the total buys were less. That was my point - though I did add it would not surprise me if JR/GGG beat Floyd h2h because of loss of Mexican and "fight" fans from his base buys combined with "new" audience from MMA oriented fight fans who are becoming big on GGG because his bouts are action affairs with KOs.

As far as JMM/Bradley goes, yes they were just in good appearances - but in both cases it was the other guy that forced the action. Maybe this is unfair, but its how much of the media perception went.

Regarding GGG/JR - a glance at the media coverage, number of tweets, forum posts.. and if you know any fight fans IRL - it should be obvious really. Something else you may recall is the success of "2 Days - GGG" on HBO. It got over 3 million viewers on initial showing, set a record for the series. It aired after the Macklin bout but prior to Stevens. Consider that along with the observation from both HBO and SHO that these types of segments are apparently most successful with the younger demographics that boxing as a sport has been lacking, and MMA has garnered. Golovkin's style and personality appeals to a younger audience that boxing has struggled with in recent years. I think thats probably why HBO is getting behind him so much, despite not having "fought anyone" other than Macklin.

As for what makes JR/GGG such a compelling fight, its a classic Immovable Object/Unstoppable Force question. Can the guy who "KO's everyone" knock out the much bigger guy who "cant be KO'ed"? Its a very simple question of the type that resonates with people, fight fans in particular and implies a brutal clash of styles and will.

WTF everyone is scared of GGG

"He knocks out heavyweights in sparring"

"He was the hardest puncher i've ever faced"

    "I'd rather face a cruiserweight"

"If he connects it's good night baby"

"Kov didn't wanna spar GGG cos he hit too hard"

Quilin I thinks has become more conservative and a company man from his pregnant wife to saying he is not afraid of fighting GGG and at the same time acknowledging GGG being a more seasoned fighter because of GGG long amateur background compare to himself, but he will fight GGG should his management team permits. Plus, his opponents have been weak and the way he is fighting them seems to me he doesn't want to get caught in too many mistakes in the ring.

Xelloss, your analysis of GGG fan base is really interesting. The more I think about it, the more I become convinced that he draws MMA fans to boxing. There are quite a few threads about Golovkin on different MMA net forums.
Also I don't believe that casual fans are still don't know who Golovkin is. Its exactly opposite. Even people who are not fans of the sport, still know who Golovkin is. His Monaco fights although not very interesting for boxing fans, are really good marketing campaigns. Prince and Princess of Monaco at a boxing match is very cool.

Golovkin would knock Quillin out and Quillin knows it. Golovkin would knock out Sturm, Martinez, Cotto, Void, Geale, etc...........

But what about WBO titlist Peter Quillin, who has become a staple of Showtime in recent years? Well, that’s the problem, the little “Cold War” that is plaguing the business. Quillin is aligned with Golden Boy Promotions and adviser Al Haymon, who have been embargoed from the network. HBO Sports Director of Programming Peter Nelson stated, “[HBO] doesn’t rule anybody out.”

“The discussions I’ve had with Peter and HBO at length and we have a long-term commitment to HBO and they’re committed to providing the platform for Gennady. As Peter said, they haven’t ruled anybody out, which means they would approve Quillin at some point. Whether Quillin would get in the ring with him is a different story. There’s a lot of politics in that situation but I strongly believe if Quillin wanted to make the fight, we would discuss it with HBO to approve him as an opponent,” explained Loeffler.
