Hopkins was good, and a borderline, back-end top 10 middleweight. That is accurate and about as far as it goes.

What he wasn't was prime, great, HOF, or ATG caliber, and he wasn't close to what he would grow to be.

As far as how GGG's opponents would match up with him, tough to say given that Mercado, another fringe world class guy who wasn't much of a puncher, floored him twice a year later. I'd favor the more consistent, older Hopkins heartily over the lot of them, and an older Hopkins matches up much better against GGG himself stylistically than in his younger days. The mature Hopkins is the trickiest matchup out of he, Toney, and Roy for Golovkin by a clear margin for me, FWIW. 1993 Hopkins is a wild card.

Hopkins wasn't in title form until a couple years after the Roy fight. Golovkin's resume, which is lacking on the top end, still looks like De la Hoya depth compared to what Hopkins had been fighting in the lead up to the Jones fight. Even 2-3 rated fighters would've done him a world of good.

As it stands, Proksa would've literally been the best guy on Hopkins' resume before that fight.

Very true. John David Jackson is on record saying that B-Hop was a much better fighter after he became a world champion and he should know better than anyone seeing how B-Hop was his main sparring partner when he (Jackson) was a world champion, actually fought him when B-Hop was a world champion, and would later go onto be a member of B-Hop's training team. B-Hop actually credits Jackson with teaching him how to fight against southpaws, learned from all that time they spent sparring each other back when Jackson held a strap.

He mentions it briefly in these interviews here but he goes into much more detail about it in another one I saw.

:good Props for posting that interview!

Hopkins is one of the best examples out there of fighters who grow once they become a champion. While many fall off the wagon once they taste that much success, Hopkins thrived with the routine and structure that it took to defend his title fight in, fight out. Of course, the increased quality of sparring and opposition he had access to once he reached that level also played a big part in his development. Jackson's in the best spot of anyone to observe

Going straight to a more polished fighter (this is also where an amateur pedigree makes a difference) in Roy from what he had been exposed to professionally was too much, too soon, even though Roy would always have a styles edge there.

RJJ would have absolutely taken GGG apart. GGG is too easy to hit and RJJ would land on him like rain on a hot tin roof, too much speed too much reflexes too much skill. He also had great power at 160 I wouldn't be shocked of he stopped GGG at 160.

Sorry for the delay my internet keeps going down today.

No problem. Yes, B-Hop definitely grew into a much better fighter. As Jackson said, he was a lot cruder back then and he learned on the job. He became a much more cerebral fighter with time, acquiring lots of knowledge and picking up new tricks (many of which of the illegal variety) along the way, which is what made him such a difficult puzzzle to solve. :good

Jones was a superb physical specimen, so at his best, he might very well last the distance against GGG. Then lose a UD for fighting in survival mode the whole match

Hopkins may have grown into a better fighter after his loss to RJJ but so did RJJ when he went to LHW, a weight class he was most comfortable at.

The issue here is styles make fights and RJJ was all wrong for Hopkins, the same way he was all wrong for Toney. That doesn't make either of those fighter any less greater, they just came across a freak of a fighter in RJJ.

Hopkins could probably beat Golovkin NOW.

    Okay.

    I can respect this.

A well thought out and logical opinion.

    Cool.

Personally, I still think that although the 93 Hopkins hadn't had any noteworthy wins, he was still better than the opposition that GGG has fought.

At the moment, I can't see any evidence that suggests that GGG would have been favoured over Roy.

People will ask who Roy beat at MW, but we saw what he did at SMW at LHW. Up until his early 30's, he was basically the same fighter, with the same attributes, only obviously a little bigger than what he was at MW. So we know exactly what Roy would have brought to the table in this fantasy fight. Whereas as great as GGG currently looks, he still has a few question marks surrounding him, and he can be tagged.

So I think at this stage, Roy would have to be favoured.

What makes you think he'd have been in survival mode?

    Look at his attributes.

He was a huge MW with incredible hand speed, reflexes, timing, accuracy, that had knock out power in either hand.
