Leonard would be exactly the sort of guy that I'd like to see Golovkin in against. Then we'd see for sure whether he really does have the footwork to chase down a world class slickster. Golovkin has taken on a few, and beat them easily. But SRL is on another level. I think I'd edge it towards GGG, simply because SRL wasn't a natural 160 guy and Golovkin is a beast at the weight - but having said that, mine is at best an educated guess and Leonard was one of those guys that could make a plan to derail the best of them.
A post on a boxing forum should be clear and should not have to be interpreted. Anyway, both Lemiuex and Rubio have no reputable fighters on their KO lists.
Hagler tried to impose his will on Leonard. SRL used speed , lateral movement and ring intelligence and quick combinations to defeat Hagler. Duran tried the same in the 2nd and 3rd fights. If Hagler and Duran could't impose their will on SRL then Golvokin would fail too. SRL by unanimous decision.
Its not that straight forward. Duran DID impose his will in Montreal. Its well known Duran's lack of responsible prefight weight management was a factor in New Orleans. Personally I think Ray wins a decision anyway in New Orleans, but it's not a given. Leonard vs Duran 3 .... Duran had transitioned from a pouncing elite defensive swarmer into a plodding counterpuncher with no legs. Leonard had more left physically than Duran in this fight As for Hagler, I have Leonard winning their fight every time I see it 6-5-1or 7-5, but it's evident Hagler's first five round decision to box instead of rumble with Leonard was a HUGE mistake and a real head scratcher. All of this being said, I believe it comes down simply to whether Leonard doesn't gas out late. Gun to my head I slightly favor Leonard to win, but I think GGG is better at cutting off the ring than Hagler and hits harder. Hagler's chin is the gold standard, but GGG's chin suffers in comparison only because Hart, Hearns, and Mugabi haven't rubber stamped it with greatness. So all in all, this is a very even, tough fight to call IMO.
I really do believe GGG is a special fighter but I also believe we've had the best of him. His nationality and poor match making have robbed the general public of a genuine ATG in my eyes. Leonard is a fight that would have cleared all doubt about GGG, I hope the kid goes out on top when he does pack it in.
Can see srl early part of fight using every attribute he's got. In and out fast, cracking rights and left hooks in, bolo punching, using the ring. Would look so good the crowd would be cheering the roof off. Ggg would be struggling to get anything going. Leonard would be dazzling. Then as the fight moves in to the later rounds golovkin starts connecting. Big rights are slamming in to sugars face and his eye is swollen. Ggg is taking over the fight. Fifteenth round ggg connects with a left hook and leonard down. He gets back up and rides out the round. Ggg wins by split decision.
Let's be honest here Leonard wouldn't take the fight if they were around today, if he did he would be brutally stopped imo.
