Canelo's popularity in the US is highly overrated. The Mexican fans are knowledgeable, and they don't buy him as the next JCC. Even in Mexico, Nacho Berenstain isn't impressed, and I heard a few Mexican boxing journalists say they hoped he would lose to Mayweather because he hasn't earned it. Golovkin's doing fine, but undersand one thing; again, the Mexican (And Latino)fight crowd is THE fight crowd in the US now, and I would chalk up at least 1/3 of his ticket/PPV sales to Chocolito. Golovkin's doing OK considering everything though. I went to a party in July of 2014 and everybody was hyped to see the UFC fight. It was a mixed crowd, 20 people or so, black, Hispanic, white, male, female, and I can't remember who was fighting that night, anyway, I made a huge deal about the great Gennady Golovkin fighting afterward, the best prospect in boxer...the destroyer...etc. Everyone was totally engaged in the UFC fight, then I had to beg the host to switch to HBO for Golovkin, and by the end of the first round...It was just me and the Southwest regional Heavyweight golden gloves champ sitting in front of the TV, everyone else had gone out to the pool. By round 3 he was gone. It's a whole different era.
It's all about instant gratification and fast fixes for the adrenaline rush. I've been to parties like that, and most of the time, they get bored if the UFC fight goes the distance, if there's not an early knockout, or if there's not enough striking. Football works because each 60 minute game is really just a series of seconds-long plays, so all the action and violence is distilled into easily digestible doses. That's why people are hooked over the course of 3 hours despite there being only 11 minutes of actual playing time. Rugby can't catch on here because fans already are hooked on the distilled violence of football and the format which supports bigger, harder hitting players. 3 minute boxing rounds, up to 12, is more than most can stand unless it's a Gatti-Ward-esque bloodbath. That was the big draw of toughman contests in their heyday, too. Just give the bloodthirsty casuals quick doses of what they crave, and they'll clamor for more.
So true...but havin said that if u give a fight fan the stats of GGG in the AMS & Pro"s then show them a good highlight reel they do respond....the break everyone has had from mike tyson has been to long and fans don't think there's a ko artist anymore..
Remember when people used to pack stadiums to see Tyson blow away whatever no hoper he had in front of him in one round? GGG is like that. Kovalev might be too. The word is getting out that they are the best around and highly entertaining. Knockouts sell tickets.
I'd say GGG is the best 160lbr and kovalev is prob the best light heavy , so casuals are not that far off if they think these two are the best .
Bumlovkin does NOT bring in huge gates. Mayweather Alvarez was a HUGE gate. Bumlovkin has *never* done anything approaching that...
you can argue, cry, stomp your feet and hold your breath, but it wont change the fact that canelo and ggg are the hottest ticket in boxing.
hottest ticket in boxing... and he doesnt even have to play a character or act like a clown to be the man.
