Many fans & pundits claim that GGG was robbed against Canelo in the first fight (some even think the same for the rematch) and won in a landslide. However, thats not how I see things. Golovkin was tentative from the start and was getting backed up as early as the 2nd (go watch it back again if you don't believe me). He never really got his attack going & only came forward when Canelo stopped punching & back peddled. Lesser fighters like Hatton, Angulo & Smith fought more confidently against Canelo than GGG did in the 1st fight, and GGG is far superior to any of those fighters. I felt a draw was reasonable and the right result. The only problem was Adelaide Byrd's scorecard. He fought a lot better in the 2nd fight (even though he was on the back-foot the whole fight), but he took a lot more risks than he did in the 1st and let his hands go more. The only problem I had was that he didn't go to the body & backed up a bit too much. This one was closer & could have gone either. No robbery here. Neither was the first.
Never one to miss an opportunity to show off my "work." First is a 720p 60FPS version of Golovkin vs Alvarez 1 with which I used HBO's video and I removed HBO's audio track and replaced it with Spanish commentary from "Combate Space" which I think is broadcasted outta South America somewhere, plus Erik Morales is on the commentary team too. The YT thumbnail I used is from the second fight though, and is just for silly purposes only. The second fight is exactly the way I wish I could have made the first fight. This has zero commentary and is also in pretty high end HD too. It looks pretty. Personally, as much as i wanna believe that I know enough about this sport (that should be an obvious warning that I don't know jack!) that I cannot be swayed by what the guys on the mic's are telling me, but I have seen myself that I can be made to look at a fight one way, then listening to someone else call the fight I can see it in that manner too. It happens. Anyway, as to the subject of your post, I pretty much agree with you. I dont think the first fight is anywhere remotely as controversial as it was made out. The card of Byrd? yes, that is certainly controversial, but to me, a draw isn't at all. GGG winning that big swath of rounds in the middle of the fight was about the last thing Canelo needed to happen in that fight. Winning that many rounds in a row can really skew the perspective of those watching. then, throw in the fact that it was one of the biggest fights of the yr and that ALWAYS means it's a fight the largest amount of casuals will watch too. and casuals are gonna believe what the commentary are telling them.
