Because then Canelo might go to 175 with hydration clauses or back to 160. The real question is, why did Canelo take his ball and go home after at best nicking the rematch, avoiding the biggest money fight in the process for years? The clue is when they asked Canelo about Golovkin's power after the first fight and he admitted it was 9/10. Golovkin his skills, power, engine, chin, mental toughness. Nobody else he chooses poses that threat - one or more key attributes are always missing, even if they are younger/faster.
Because 168 is less competitive than 160. Also, even if he went to 168 there's no way to force Canelo to complete the trilogy. Maybe when GGG is past 40 and coming apart at the seams will ginger look his way again.
Is that a Genuine reason for him not going up to 168? Seems he could cement his legacy by going up to 168.
168 is a wasteland. If Canelo doesn't fight him, who is he going to cement his legacy against? Benavidez? That's like the only decent guy there.
The GGG question was asked of Canelo this week and his response was that he has no intention of moving down to 160 but if the people still want the fight and GGG cares to move up to 168 then he doesn't see why not.
Old story. Canelo's team promises stuff and then drags Golovkin out for months. "He should fight Benavidez first to prove himself worthy" etc.
They're not wrong though. Another GGG fight for Canelo seems pointless and would just be a money-grab for both of them. Canelo will get very little credit for beating GGG now unless Golovkin proves his relevancy again.
Weight divisions exist for a reason. Unless making weight debilitates a fighter, they wont be better off at a higher weight. Seems Golovkin has never gotten to that point so no need to. Its actually refreshing nowadays when a top fighter stays in the same division for their whole career. If Canelo ends up vacating one or all of the belts soon, I imagine Golovkin will take a crack at nabbing one of them.
@The Townsend its quite simple m8 Get GGG on CLEN and he just might move up to 168lb. Without Clen his is fine carving his legacy at 160lb as the best middleweight since HAGLER. He's already got two wins vs Canelo who is unified champ at 168lb. Don't see what he has to prove by moving up.
I think GGG is being carefully handled now because his time as an elite fighter is over and his team knows it , that's why he won't fight Charlo. At 168 he' be even more vulnerable .
