The unusual thing about the way Golovkin cuts the ring off is what he does once he has. Usually fighters have their opponents cornered or on the ropes, and then blitz them head on without allowing them to escape. It's not always eefective a la Pacquiao. Golovkin cuts the ring until his opponent's back hits the ropes, then he approaches them at an angle. His angle of approach ofen leaves them with one very obvious way out, but it's a trap because he prefers to clip his foes and mid to long range. He dropped Murray with the body shot and Munroe in the second round as they seemingly slid away from Golovkin, seemingly not aware they moved into exactly the place he wanted them to be.
Foreman was very good at cutting off the ring but not elite. Elite is Bernard Hopkins, or Julio Cesar Chavez
The real skill is getting Ward in the ring in the first place. Those 90/10 splits and $2 million minimum purses against the Paul Smiths of the world are too attractive for him to risk upsetting the gravy train. All he needs is one fringe guy a year to be desperate enough to sign on, then he's set.
He cuts off the ring too well. He made a runner like Monroe Jr. stand and fight his fight. Tell me, who can outbox Golovkin 160 lbs. and down? I want to hear this.
GGG has a great catch and shoot jab which helps in cutting the ring off. He tends to win the jab-duel in the early rounds. He catches/parries the opponents jab and smashes through his own power jab. This usually pushes the opponent back or stops their advance enough for him to safely take a half-step in closing the distance. GGG has his range, takes away the jab and then starts to put punches together. With his power it usually turns pretty one-sided by the mid rounds (if the opponent can withstand the power that long). I have yet to see him be outjabbed though it is possible.
