https://streamable.com/xmdd Short clip featuring many things you might expect to see in a barroom brawl or a slapstick comedy routine rather than a fight between two top contenders: -One of Galento’s ridiculous, nakedly telegraphed lead haymakers; -Baer blankly standing and waiting around for Galento’s punches instead of using footwork and throwing straight punches to exploit Galento’s flaws; - Baer brilliantly deciding to duck under Galento’s lunges (with his head completely unprotected), bringing his otherwise unhittable head squarely within the Galento’s range and taking himself completely out of fighting position; and -Some of the ugliest, most uneducated footwork caught on film from Galento and stiff, ponderous footwork from Baer. Classic stuff.
What you fail to understand is Galento didn't give a **** about defense. His offense was his defense. He was always looking for that 1 shot to put guys away. He had probably one of the greatest chins at heavyweight. He took tons of abuse and never went down until the Louis fight at the END of his career. 105 fights and he wasn't knocked down even once. Galento's real bomb was the left hook on top of his outstanding endurance and chin. Never really had anything other than that. So of course there is no real point for him to try to use any other punches. Galento also fought out of a crouch so he could spring at his opponent with that wild left hook. Had max been through straight punches like you said he would have opened himself up to being countered with that left hook. Max Baer was a brawler. He wasn't a boxer with all of a suddenly in his 77 fights was he going to come up with magnificent footwork to score a decision against Galento. The fans didn't want to see that anyway. Baer had the chin to brawl too. All in all it seems you would rather watch two fighter's box each other. I and most fight fans would rather see a brawl regardless if it looks like a bar room brawl. Ali at least knocked out top ranked guys. Without that he wouldn't even have been remembered.
They do look poor, but you can’t judge them on that in isolation. The bottom line is that Max Baer beat Max Schmeling, and Tony Galento beat Lou Nova, both of who look very good on film. The conclusion inescapable follows that they were much better than this film suggests.
The people at the time were also laughing and saying how appalling that two pro boxers fought like that.
Sounds like you agree with me that both men were both limited, flawed, sloppy but entertaining brawlers? :good
The Lou Nova win is so universally besmirched on account of Galento's brutal fouling that it's borderline disingenuous to tout it as evidence that Galento was good. Random trivia: Can you name the best 200-lb+ opponent Schmeling ever beat?
They were brawlers who got the job done. Needless to say those brawlers would take the heavies of today on a wild ride! Just because someone is a brawler doesn't take anything away from them. They proved they had iron chins, heavy hands, and bull-like endurance.
galento didn't have an iron chin at all, he got ko'd by the halway mark by a bad version of baer and in 4 by louis. i'm not really a fan of baer but i'll defend him a little bit, he was lazy but had physical gifts and coasted through a lot of his career, he had a much higher ceiling than galento.
The Clown Prince was doing what he did best the public loved his antics and Galento was a big character himself. Their personalites showed in the ring and outside of the ring. If you think they can't fight its probably because you haven't boxed before and don't understand what you are watching.
So then I assume you've read that Galento beat him by thumbing and fouling him shamelessly and mercilessly while an inept ref looked on? PS - I just read that Nova also allegedly had a serious strep infection going into the fight.
Why don't you read my initial description of the clips then and explain how exactly I don't know what I'm watching. PS - Great personality, eh? Sounds like you don't really know much about Galento beyond his gregarious fat clown act.
:zzz We've been over this before. It's easy to cherry-pick isolated, unrepresentative clips of fighters doing very sloppy things. Question: Is that what you are alleging is going on in my Galento-Baer clip? Do you really want to compare Thurman and Porter's skills and techniques with those of Galento and Baer? Of course you don't. BTW, Porter's one of the crudest stars of this era and he's still far more advanced than Baer (and Galento makes him look like Pernell Whitaker).
