He knocked him out. I'm thinking that the blow was landed on the heel of Carnera's hand and that Sharkey never saw it until impact. Carnera ,whatever else he may or may not have been, was a large, powerful man. I have read the debates on here for years and, if he was not normally a one punch guy, he threw that one right. He got his weight shifted, and turned his hips and shoulders all the way through. That was a hard shot and, if you have ever been it by the heel of someone's hand, you know that it probably adds to the weight of the blow.
One thing I noticed for the first time. Sharkey hit the back of his head hard against the rope as he fell. I think it possible the rope contributed to the knockout. He was hurt by the uppercut and thrown back and falling. He then hit the rope. My reaction is that it was on the level due to doubting that Sharkey was a good enough actor to have that blank look on his face as he is going down. *I wonder also about the Loughran KO by Sharkey in 1929. The punch really didn't look like it should have finished Loughran but he fell awkwardly and hit the back of his head hard against the lower rope.
I also think that it is very unlikely, that any fighter who already had the lineal heavyweight title, would agree to take a dive.
Very possibly. I say that having been hit with that part of the hand a number of times. There seems to be less give there than in the bones of the hand.
My sister is an actress for murder mystery weekends, and she regularly has to act out scenes where she is poisoned, or shot. She has encountered no small difficulty, falling over in such a way that she does not hurt herself. Her preferred option is to drop to her knees, and take it from there. I don't think that she would do it in the manner illustrate by Sharkey!
I'm w you ... its so bizarre as Primo is really viewed as a guy with limited skills and who despite all his KO's is rated by no one as a serious all time puncher at heavyweight and that Sharkey was a very tough guy with a terrific chin ... all that aside this looks like one of those random times when a lighting bolt strikes .. if Sharkey threw it then it was a hell of an acting job as his face and eyes seem like he was smashed out of it .. Rez, great clip !
Sorry Grey. I can't agree that the punch was thrown with great form. For me, the best uppercuts have the left arm tucked in and the left leg pointing inwards across the line of the punch to provide that compactness and snap. This punch has all the energy being transferred through rather than exploding on the target because Carnera swings his body. I've said it before. His technique is like he is throwing a bucket of water into the crowd rather than a well-timed blow because his left side is all wrong. I also believe Sharkey has a bit of form here as I found Dempsey's KO of him very sus.
Unless his children's lives had been threatened? I'd consider that a pretty good motive for going in the tank. And for denying it afterwards.
