    I've seen Uzcudun vs Wills and the poor quality footage vs Louis. I've never seen the Schmeling bouts. I've read that Schmeling was 2-0-1 against him but should of been 3-0. Either way Uzcudun was a very tough customer. And this was the first footage I've seen of the Carnera bout and I must agree with Reznick it gives great depth and perspective to how physically imposing Carnera was to his opponents of the day. His sheer measurements posed problems and probably allowed for him to compensate for a lack of elite level skill against many of the B and C level challengers of his day. Of course when he met A level like Louis and Baer he was outmatched.

    Carnera was part freak, and part circus strong man. I don't think he wanted to become a fighter. Some guy discovered him in a circus and promised him more money. So he took up boxing. If he was alive today, he'd become an entertainment wrestler / media character role person.

    In some films, he's more fluid than others.

    Carrera actually boxed a bear. Judging by the footage, the bear was getting the better of the action though Carrera might have been holding back a bit.

    I don't get it.
    How can anyone call him ponderous?

    Like, do you not see his lateral footwork and range steps?
    No SHW was as fluid as him besides Fury and maybe Wlad.

    Almost all other SHWs had serious ponderous/balance issues.

    Carnera really dwarfed reeves...I've heard that carnersa broke a Germans neck during ww2

    Look at him.

    Knees bent properly, allowing him more dynamic upper body movement for range control and defense. Rare for a SHW.
    Lateral movement. Fluid. Beautiful 85" jab. What more can you ask for?
    He would be perfect for todays long range battles.

    And today I realized that Boxiana has done his reputation wrong. The effects linger almost 100 years later.

    I think they expected him to shoot lightning bolts from his eyes, and were disappointed.

    I agree with you Rez. It's another example of older footage distorting a fighters abilities. Carnera was well schooled.

    The idea is that Carnera was no great fighter but far better than the stumblebum he is generally portrayed as. The skills are there but execution because of his enormous size leaves him wide open for a sharpshooter such as Louis. Joe is loading up that right over the Carnera jab all night.
