just because hes wearing shorts that belong on a pair of legs near central park at 3 in the morning doesnt mean you can automatically beat him. unless you mean "beat" in a different sense of the word

It wasn't a bout, Edison wanted to demonstrate his new camera and approached John L Sullivan to box an exhibition,Sullivan wanted too much money so Corbett got the call.
Courtney has no traceable record and was in the tiny make shift ring strictly as a mobile punching bag the exhibition was filmed in Edison's famous," Black Box", the background was hung with black crepe and silly token ropes were strung up to give the facsimile of a real ring.
I've Corbett's account of this encounter somewhere,he said he was going to let Courtney ,whom he had never heard of,[who had?] go a few minutes before putting him out of his misery.Corbett was unnecessarily contemptuous of Courtney insulting him before the exhibition,but then Corbett was only a gentleman in appearance.
I think any scrub fighter would look good against the opposition that Courtney provided.

 

I'm aware of the background. The point is that Corbett is throwing a four punch combination. Posters on this forum have insisted combination punching did not exist during those times. Obviously blatantly inaccurate.

 

Oh I agree about the combos,but lets be honest the opposition was abysmal.

 

No argument from me on that score, I just take issue with calling it a real fight and Courtney a real fighter!

It was a bout. Two men were fighting in a ring. An exhibition is still a bout unless it was choreographed which this I do not believe was. The opponent appeared to be trying and he was getting his butt kicked with solid punches.

 

Weren't you around at the time,perry?

Anyway didn't really look much of a combination to me.Just wildly flailing away left right , left right, to the head past the outstretched arms of the human punchbag. Even the ref was laughing at how amateurish it looked.
