The idea though is the entire idea that old timers (and it does not get much older than Corbett) did not know how to throw combinations is disproven by this one short film clip.

Looks similar to Carlos Maussa to be honest. As far as combo's go, it's not particularly impressive.

 

Now I see where Conor McGregor learned to slap his punches.

Great idea. You could get together with like minded people and pretend that video of Jim Corbett is a display of boxing skill. That video makes me think that if a man couldn't get a job in those days, he could become heavyweight champion.

Issue is no nothing fans like you make statements not backed by the facts such as old timers did not throw combinations. Here is one of the oldest of the old timers and guess what? He is throwing a four punch combination. Tell everyone you were wrong.

 

Yeah, we thought that nobody in the history of boxing had ever thrown a multi-punch combination until the 1930s. Shame on us!

 

But even if we decide to treat all weaponless hand to hand combat as the same craft (which is of course highly debatable), surely even you recognize that this craft changed dramatically in the past couple centuries, a tiny fraction of its existence. Technological change, increased literacy, improved cross-continental and cross-oceanic transportation, radio, film, bigger and denser metropolitan areas, etc. all made for conditions far more conducive to unprecedented change and progress in the craft. Much, much easier for good ideas and techniques to spread and replace less effective, less efficient ones. Hence, the sport today looks very little like the flat-footed, immobile combat that European fighters engaged in two hundred years ago, at the very least.

 

Luis Ortiz bends his knees the way a 6-4, 240 pounder should. He is a well schooled fighter who came up in the Cuban system. But I'm sure you think Burns and Corbett and Baer, etc. would beat him? I never said Corbett couldn't throw a combination, I've never mentioned him at all. Watching that type video to prepare to box today would be as relevant as watching Harvard play Yale in 1910 to prepare for the 2018 national championship game. If you think that represents skill, good for you, enjoy it. I sure won't be looking at that video for ideas...I'm not stuck in the past.
