That's the tragedy. He was tailor made for 12 rounders.

Regarding William Miller, i am pretty sure i have a thread featuring articles on some of his boxing fights. He was a wrestler and a boxer. Not only a wrestler. You dont beat Larry Foley unless you are a good boxer. If anyone has some articles on the actual miller vs corbett exhibition it would be great to read (as would other similar articles).

Regarding Joe Godfrey, yes you are correct i did confuse him with Old Chocolate. That being said, if memory serves me correct, Old Chocolate did fight as Joe Godfrey and there was also another fighter named Joe Godfrey (a white middleweight i think) from around that time.

All that being said, you are also correct about the exhibitions as opposed to real fights.

I wasnt really concerned with the motive. There are plenty of ways to boost Corbett, i dont think that number of fights is one of them. One of the main things I dont understand about this list of Mendoza's. If you accept that it is a list of exhibition fights that took place (and even if you give the benefit of the doubt that they should be listed as fights and not exhibitions) then how in the world can you make the further conclusion that he actually won those fights. For this to happen, you would need to have some type of news report or comment from corbett or someone else. I would like to read many of those reports.

Yes, and the simulations will be fairly realistic using AI.

Ray Kurzweil like an early Ali was never wrong on a prediction, and says that neocortex augmentation will start in the 30's.

    Keep on punching!

Millers record according to Box rec, is 20 fights 1 win ,1 draw 1 defeat, the rest being no decisions. The draw was with Larry Foley for the Australian title. He never beat Foley and there is no record of him being Australian Boxing Champion. He did match John Dwyer who is on that list, but at wrestling. Dwyer was 19 years Corbett's senior they never fought a real match, though they may have put on an exhibition.
Mendoza does not concern himself with truth he is obsessed with building up Jim Jeffries and will stoop to any level to do so if cynicaly inflating Jeffries opponents records will do the job then that is what he will gladly do .

This is not the first time he has tried this con trick ,for con trick it is, but once again he and his agenda have been exposed.
James Jackson Jeffries was a great fighter and a down to earth plain speaking man I believe he would find such ,dishonest ,underhand tactics as abhorrent and inexcusable ,as I do.

Thanks for the article, Corbett is so right about the importance of the thumb's position,I dislocated my left thumb on someone's eye socket through incorrect punching,he had a black eye for a week I now have a permanent enlarged callous around the base of the thumbs joint .

Corbett knows what he's talking about. Back in his day, the gloves didn't do the best job of protecting the hands.

Therefore making a fist property and striking where the top knuckles, not only increase the power of the blow, it also protects the hands. This is a reason why old timers were better body punchers. That punch seldom hurt their hands! A skill born out of necessity for the times if you will.

Today the art of fist making is less significant as trainers use inches of tightly wrapped tape, and the gloves do a much better job of protecting the hand. The result is fighters worry less about throwing punched.

Reznick and others like him are doing fine work. Taking grainy older films that run slow and are shaky and cleaning them up.

100 years later modern boxing fans can now see and appreciate guys like Corbett. That wasn't the case 5-20 years ago as many newer historians or serious fans quickly dismissed them based on the poor quality of the film.

We only have about 30-40 minutes of Corbett in and out of the ring boxing. That's it. Just imagine what his highlights would look like if we had 10 of his fights!
