https://streamable.com/61iqu Obviously didn't go so well for TNT but the way that he starts off the fight--the hard jabs, the use of his surprisingly quick feet to maintain distance, and the way that he uses his size and strength to tie Tyson up inside--reminds me a lot of Douglas' performance in Tokyo. No coincidence that they're both mobile, strong 6'3+/235lb+ athletes.
Tubbs certainly had a good strategy - for one round. Tubbs was not in shape and only fought that way for one round. In the second round he fought too much on the inside. Douglas probably did look at the Tyson/Tubbs tape. But, Buster could keep with his fight plan because he was in shape. But, also Tyson was in better shape himself for Tubbs than for Douglas. So, it's possible Buster still loses to the version of Tyson that fought Tubbs.
Watching that clip and I'm thinking Tyson doesn't look any better here than in 90, Douglas would have still boxed his head off IMO.
Tony tubbs did a good job in that first. Very fast handed. Good in working to tyson s body. Just a shame he was out of shape and meeting a prime mike.
Oh it's ridicolous.Tyson destroyed Tubbs by classic one punch ko in the second round, Tubbs proved nothing. Tony Tubbs never was a "strong" athlete he was featherfisted (I don't know only one remarkable ko win by Tubbs). Was Tubbs mobile compared to the lightningfast Tyson ? I doubt it.Otherwise Tyson could destroy faster fighter than Tubbs for example Biggs or the Tillman fights. -Otherwise Tubbs didn't win the first round against Tyson. Just saying...
Tubbs certainly had much faster hands than Biggs and better mobility than Tillman, at least the heavyweight version of Tillman.
His anticipation and distance measurement was good too. He feinted by turning his hips and Tyson reacted from pretty far away. But the energy efficiency is drastically different for him and Tyson here. I can see why he couldn't keep it up. Douglas fought with championship level heart that night.
