Foreman's left uppercut was brutal, not too many heavyweights know how to throw that punch correctly.

It's such a tight punch, you can really pack a lot into such a short amount of space. Cooney actually had quite the left uppercut himself (Ali, too...though he rarely used it).

great points. Cooney had a great one and Ali had a good one too.

Outside of a left hook, the left uppercut is my favourite punch. An orthodox fighter mastering it

You have to be extremely precise with it though. We saw this with Tyson vs Ruddock. Ruddock hurt Tyson with his left uppercut smash many times but Tyson's straight right hand countered Ruddock a lot, and Tyson won as a result. If you telegraph it like Ruddock did, a fighter with a strong straight right hand will counter you all night long. But if you use it effectively and don't telegraph it, it is the most dangerous punch an orthodox fighter can land. We saw it recently with Povetkin, he did not telegraph it and it was an amazing left uppercut ko.

Ruddock really hurt Mike with that shot several times during their fights...I think he might have conceivably won the second fight if he'd thrown it off the jab, or after a right. Ruddock for some completely mystifying reason eschewed setting up that punch, which would have made it at least twice as effective. I remember watching that second fight and yelling at the tv: "off the jab! Throw the left-right-left...what an idiot!". I mean, he wouldn't even try to jab the smaller Tyson to keep him away from him...I really hope his corner didn't tell him not to jab, because that was the dumbest thing possible. Ruddock really did have an excellent left but decided to be a one-shot moron and just upperhook to distraction.

Exactly. He was not setting it up. He did land some thunderous ones but he kept dropping his left hand and Mike kept countering it with straight right hands.

Poor tactics from Ruddock but awesome power and heart.

Old George is such a tank isn't he. He didn't look flash and often looked ponderous but he was almost impossible to move and packed so much power in those punches, that at times, looked a lot less potent than they actually were.

Every St. Paddy's Day I have a big ass party at my farm to celebrate my Irish heritage. On the big screen on a loop I play the Foreman-Cooney fight all day and night. Music of course is playing too but the only thing you can watch is this. We have so much fun every year. Thank you Gerry Cooney.

    Thank you my man.
I had a Patreon for a short while but I decided to take it down. I like to make videos on a whim as a hobby rather than on a schedule as work, so I don’t want people donating if I’m making a video once a year or so.

    Glad you enjoy the videos!

What makes that uppercutt special is the side step Foreman takes to create leverage for the shot. Perfectly executed. Great clip @reznick I had never seen it from that angle.

Cooney at this point of his career made it easy for him.
