[GIF] Jack Dempsey slips 8 of Gene Tunneys punches

Well sir then I suggest you take a trip to a place called eyeglass world. It is literally right there on video that the first jab lands cleanly and the second jab barely makes contact while Jack is pulling away then the rest miss. Perhaps you were watching a different clip then the one in the op?

Second, what does Tyson have to do with this? To touch on the subject there are plenty of instances where Tyson slipped a large amount of punches and didn't throw anything back by the third punch.

There were no "push slaps" (whatever that is) thrown by either fighter in this clip. Do you Dempsey detracters just make up new stuff on the spot? I've never heard or seen a "push slap" is that the same thing as a "straight hook"? Which again, I have never witnessed but only heard of in the legendary anti-Dempsey circles.

 

It doesn't matter what the footage shows. You detractors are always going to have an excuse or blatant lie to explain why Dempsey looked good on film.

"Ehhh the other guy wasn't looking!"
"Umm idk but Dempsey was only 120 lbs so he wouldn't beat anyone past the year 1793!"

What post are you referring to? Above the one you replied to is my post then above that is your post then above that is one I replied to.

 

I doubt that either of them invented their defensive techniques.

I suspect it was more a case of employing the best of what had gone before.

 

As a young man for me Dempsey was a true Legend, I met him at his restaurant and in the Garden. He was a big man for some reason he seemed a lot taller than Joe Frazier who I met a few times (Frazier was wide & strong,thick) Dempsey had big strong hands & still looked formidable at his advanced age. Talking with some of the old guys at Ring magazine (Nat Fleicher & others) and talking to some of the older boxing guys who saw him. It would be like fight fans of the Tyson era talking about Tyson. Dempsey was Tyson before Tyson but not a guy who came up in the amateurs but like many fighters of his era came up hard & sometimes fought without adequate nutrition or training. Dempsey was HUGE in his day (1st million dollar gate) but he was also a media atraction (like Ali) Dempsey was more than likely one of the meanest guys to enter the ring

If I had to say anything negative about Dempsey it would be his inactivity while Champion. He was such a huge star and without lack of reference to past history he became inactive as Champ ( because the gloved boxing era was still pretty young (other than J.J.Jeffries & Jess Willard & their long hiatus as champ) IMO he could have added much to his legasy had he been more active because of his greatness.

Dempsey for me was one of the great explosive heavyweights, Tunney was an experienced fighter when they fought & more active. Dempsey had a lot of talent, raw power ( guys like Duran,Tyson, remind me of him) Frazier a little because of front leaning but different body style and attack, Marciano leaned back. Liston had the meaness but more of a average speed clubbing puncher, with long reach where Dempsey was sharp & faster & could throw short punches with ferocity.

All of these guys were great fighters in their day, each era with a different set of circumstances. Dempsey truly came up in a hard tough era, coal mines & barenuckle street brawls & riding rail cars. He wasnt trained in an elite amateur atmosphere like Tunney & others later but he was born to be Heavyweight champion like his hero (john L. Sullivan) & prepared himself mentally & physically at a very young age to be Heavyweight Champ.

Again inacivity hurt him but still had that Tunney long count & Sharkey KO ring rust & all.

Dempsey burns a lot of energy there which was probably Tunney's intent as matador. And yeah, seems like a left counter would have turned the dynamic of this situation rather quickly.

 

And its this skill that was rarely seen at heavyweight and why Dempsey is looked at so fondly as ATG he changed the game for the big men....too bad his title reign videos and his upcoming fights were not filmed or of this quality

 

You should avoid thinking that somebody is a pioneer, just because they were the first person to display a certain skill on film.

 

Whats the point in slipping 8 punches if nothing comes of it at the end?

He was better off just standing there. Then he wouldn't have gave Tunny the first few point scoring jabs..

We're talking about a fight where Demspesy on his last legs got schooled for 19 rounds of 20. There's nothing to praise about Jack losing those fights.

 

1. Dempsey didn't get schooled 19 out of 20 rounds. He was pretty competitive for a good chunk of those fights but definitively lost them.

3. Nobody is praising Jack for losing the fights. It's just a nice clip of a great fighter. The outcome of the fight has nothing to do with it.

 

This is just stupid.

 

I look at that footage and i see what Tunny is doing , not what Dempsey isn't. Its almost like nobody ever saw a guy eat a jab before . .
