Again, analysis by giff has severe limitations. Tunney wore Dempsey outside with workrate, movement and the stinging sort of shots he is throwing here. However, to appreciate this winning strategy you must view the fight as a longer physical narrative than a few seconds. Dempsey performs as we should expect a world class athlete to perform but as a tactician he is in the process of losing.

You're saying Dempsey should have not been the aggressor and instead kept his distance and let Tunney come to him. Essentially you're saying Dempsey should have "boxed a boxer".

That would have been incredibly stupid.

 

Dude what point are you trying to make? Dempsey did some pretty cool **** by slipping all of those punches. What is so hard to get?

 

And therein lies the reason why i gravitated more to what Tunny was producing rather than what Jack was. Knowing how the fights played out , you already know how his efforts in defense and on the front foot didn't lead anywhere. Which is why i assumed a slight devils advocate role in arguing why it should have been a Gene Tunny appreciation gif. But its still understandable how it highlights Dempsey's breakthrough in defense maneuvers.

 

I believe he should have come forward behind a step-n jab opposed to leading with a right hand.

 

Jabbing wouldn't have been that effective because Tunney would have definitely out jabbed him there. I think slipping was the right thing to do because it made Tunney miss and frustrated him. Again, this is just one specific instance from a fight. Things change drastically as to what he should have done when you put it into context and in terms of the entire fight and not to mention things are a lot different in the ring vs looking in from our perspective.

 

Yes, they were both the real deal.

I far prefer watching heavies of this size compete than what we have today. It's partly why the cruiser tourney is so good. You have actual pace and grace.

 

Great post...I also met Frazier, Dempsey, Tyson,foreman others...Dempsey sure was lucky to have those strong, hard, huge hands...no wonder he rarely injured them and could have ruined them barroom brawling.
Dempsey's main problem was his inactivity....certainly not talent...maybe best all round heavyweight ever...thanks
