Sorry pal but your way off here! Far before the twenties Joe Gans had mastered all and more of the proper boxing techniques including feinting which is almost unknown today. Jack knew every facet of modern techniques and every punch and combination in the books including infighting which few fighters today know how to do effectively. I learned as a boxer in my teens things in Jacks book, How to Box, that I have never seen in any of the other such books up to this decade. Benny the Great, the Lightweight champion of the twenties, Loughran and others mastered every facet of modern techniques and as with Gans some of them are lost today. Just a way off statement!

 

Jack really wasn't close enough to throw back in this clip and Gene was moving away but its an example of the abilities Jack had in his prime. By contrast Benny Briscoe with a similar style to Jacks could slip and bob as Jack did here but never learned to punch afterwards even when in close.

 

No way, you could counter Tunney there.

Tunney works a full 180 spin around Dempsey and doesnt stop throwing.

If he threw a right counter, Tunney would have done been out of the way with a jab in his face.

Tunney's ability to punch on the move is something else.

 

What type of counter would have worked there?

Tunney is circling to his left with each punch.

Dempsey would have to lead right, but Tunney is on the move and maintaining distance...Tunneys left is going to always get there first.

I dont see a counter oppirtunity.

 

Okay, well Dempsey didnt see one either. We are at the advantage, given we can see the whole picture and dont have Tunney flipping a jab in our face. I really dont see anything but a looped right hook that Tunney was out of range of.

 

It is easy to criticize with the benefit of hindsight, and not being in the thick of the action.

 

If we're judging after the fact, Dempsey probably could have caught Tunney on the ropes if he'd taken a hard diagonal step forward with his right at the right moment and pressed him while he was circling. The crouching and weaving actually played into Tunney's hands there. If you look at it in slow motion, Dempsey takes himself completely out of position while executing his defensive maneuvers.

 

All he could do, not a counter, and thats assuming he knew where and when Tunney would move.

 

Gene spent part of time doing roadword running backwards and punching as he did so, reading this as a young fighter with a similar style I followed his lead in this and had good results also.

 

Gass-Dort just proved this again.

 

I woulda thrown a left jab at Dempsey, and when he ducked, I woulda timed an uppercut and snapped his head off. Yeah, that's what I woulda done.
