    Read newspapers from Willard’s era.

    He was criticised, but he was favoured over everybody!

    The main stain on his character, was his refusal to fight Fred Fulton!

    Interesting that the newspapers reported close to even odds, given that it was a 180-nothing-pound fighter against a (newly) invincible super-heavyweight behemoth! :think

    Probably a few of the people betting hadn't seen either fight. Or hadn't seen them fight in awhile. Wasn't like today they couldn't just look up one of Dempsey's or Willards past fights and make a decision. Most of them were probably just going off Willard beating Johnson and the size difference. They just couldn't see how anyone could beat a giant.
