    Buddy is also hurt.
And he’s pretty much gone here.

Also, Louis pushes Baer’s right arm down with his right glove right before the uppercut to the body. He also keeps his left glove over Baers left arm after the uppercut, possibly preventing him from pushing the shoulder in front of the chin more. And when the right comes .002 seconds later, he‘ doesn’t have time to react.

LL Cool J just commented on this gif, and said “Mean.”

    Thought that was pretty cool!

These are great. Keep 'em coming! Seeing the minute detail of Louis's finishing technique is supremely valuable.

I wouldn't call that much of a defense, nor a specific name for a defense. He literally left himself wide open for that right hand.

Schmeling to me shows more of a philly shell than the poorer Baer brother.

The Philly shell.....keep your left arm down so that your opponent can crack your chin like an eggshell with a straight right.

Or shoulder roll and counter with your own against an off balanced opponent. It's a failure of the artist, not of the art.

Joe Louis breaking down a sparring partners philly shell and shoulder roll.

    https://streamable.com/hek72

He starts by throwing a combo to the body.
As soon as the sparring partner goes to the uppercut from the philly shell, Louis goes to town, jolting his head around with what looks like 50% effort on his power.

Wow, that guy is not good at using it either. Why is his right hand down by his chest and crossing over the center line? Why are his feet so together and why is he standing so upright?

He had no defense for his Joe's left hook which forced open is stance allowing Joe to land the right hand follow ups.

Even half-hearted Joe was a nasty thumping puncher.
