In this clip, Kalambay showcases some of his offensive and defensive skills while exploiting some of Barkley's technical flaws. Great footwork, head movement and all around defense, blocking punches and getting in and out of range. Nice display of efficient, tight counter-punching against a dangerous, aggressive opponent. Even outjabs him despite being shorter and having a shorter reach. https://streamable.com/cyey
And another one. Kalambay lets his hands go a bit more in this one and does some Mayweather-esque rolling when Barkley has him in the corner: https://streamable.com/b5g3
Thanks for sharing, dude! :good I love those gifs of highlights! Prime Kalambay was a helluva fighter and his first bout against McCallum is one of my favorites!
Herol Graham would have gotten that world title fight against Barkley, but his manager boneheadedly took a fight with Kalambay and Kalambay beat him and took his place against Barkley. Kalambay had quite a run between the Graham upset and the Nunn blowout loss. The win over McCallum was quite an upset at the time.
Sumbu was a very underrated fighter .even more so today is unknown by most fight fans but I would give him a shot against any middle weight in history.being based in Europe didn't help plus other fighters avoided him .who could blame them?.
Wow!! I didn't know he had a rematch with Mccallum! I have to look that up! I remember watching the first fight on ABC I think & it was practically a given that Mccallum was going to win. Kalambay boxed circles around him.
Anyone have any additional Kalambay fight recommendations (other than Graham and McCallum)? Might watch one or two this weekend.
The right uppercut counter off of Barkley's hook to the body at the start of the first clip is beautiful. That might be my favorite counter in boxing.
Haven't seen this fight before but Good God how Barley made 160 is anybody's guess. Kalambay looks 2 weights smaller in comparison.
Barkley just looks taller to me, tbh. He didn't just make 160 for this fight--he made 156, according to boxrec. Barkley was well-muscled but not especially thick or broad. Looked "light in the ass"--small around the hips and with a thin lower body.
156? Because he looks like Tommy Hearns grew up in a weight room. Skipped a few leg day's I'll give you that.
Good call! That's what the LA Times reported: http://articles.latimes.com/1987-10-24/sports/sp-4024_1_iran-barkley
