Louis showed how much of a harder puncher than Baer ever was here. Carnera was limited but had an exceptional heart and walked away here to stay alive.
I think it's more down to technique than power. Max had more raw power but Joe's technique and speed were far superior.
Baer used a long windup or sometimes even a running start when delivering a big punch. If he landed he was capable of killing a guy. Louis needed less than a foot. His short punches could be devastating.
Baer wound up and hit Primo w everything just like he did w Schmeling. For some reason people simply under rate the monster single punch power Louis had. He hit harder than Baer or Marciano, two absolute great punchers. Louis at his best was the best combination of speed and power ever. At least as good as Tyson.
This is a very good point. I like the Tyson comparison. Sometimes the combos are so flashy and beautiful that we forget the power of the single punches. Also, Louis' jab was a power job par excellence, snapping dudes' heads back like bobble dolls.
