It was pretty fast for HW power punches. That Louis & Tyson were faster does not mean this was not pretty impressive-his short arms help him unfurl with speed up close.
And they are generally correct. Because even his contemporaries were saying this. Just because he catches an ancient, fossilized guy whose heart wasn't in it doesn't mean he is suddenly some speed merchant. Speed is perceived in relief. You could see someone running solo on a track and be impressed... Until you line them up against someone elite. And then that elite person would again look standing still against a Wells or Lewis.
You mean GOAT should be...GEAT? You mean Marciano wasn't Italian? Why wasn't I informed of this?! Marciano was FIVE NOTHIN'...HUNDRED NOTHIN...
I don't think Ez was fast on his feet by the time Rock got to him, not at all, or at least not past a certain number of rounds. The other two just weren't very good, fast or not.
Was merely referring to hand speed. I don’t think Marciano was fast but I certainly don’t think he was slow. More average speed.
He was younger than his best opponents, I'll give him that. Look, while you can't say that Rocky was a talentless, skill-less non-athlete who had no physical advantages, you do have to look at the quality of opponent his era provided to assay his true ability across generations. In all seriousness, Rocky was a phenomenal athlete as measured by boxing, stamina off the charts and punishing power. Add to this his incredible fighting spirit and that equals a fair amount of wins in any era where he matches up against similarly sized opponents. That he had a Zero in the L column is the least of his accomplishments. It could have happened to better fighters with similarly managed careers in equally weak eras. I used to watch him regularly but have seen the available footage so many times my viewing has diminished with age.
