How do you rate Marciano's boxing technique and skill in this clip, from his second fight against the 6-foot, 184-lb LaStarza?

Scary killer. Amazing balance, distribution between back foot and front is perfect. Weight shift with movement is elite caliber. His reaction time is great, constantly feinting and reacting to possible attacks. Great efficient footwork compared to Lastarza. The "it" factor really shows on Rocky, just from his movements. Scary whipping bulldoze punches. He puts every iota of his momentum into the punches.

    Elite fighter. Savage killer.

Your description seems incredibly incomplete and extremely exaggerated. BTW, you saw great reaction time and great footwork in that clip? And "amazing" balance and "elite" weight shift...? No offense but you're really, really reaching here.

He's always carrying his weight to counter with a haymaker.
He uses his small body to add another dimension to slugging. He's versatile in where the rest of his body goes when he throws a haymaker. And look at the way he imposes his strength by walking Roland down. Rolands hard jabs are soft for Rocky. Like Golovkin being in the ring with guys his size, it's not fair.

I bet if he had his entire film catalogue we would see some of the curses that came with his gifts, but in all the footage we have he's a refined championship level athlete and fighter.

What round is this? Rocky seems to be taking it slow and feeling him out.

Great footwork for a stalker to keep in rhythm and range with Walcott.

    Look at :20
Perfect power jab, perfect weight distribution, fist has momentum of a brick, arm perfectly straight. and slides his back foot laterally to keep Walcott from getting an angle on him.
That my friend is beautiful form.

In the Burt Sugar days, they didn't marvel at these details because information was poorer. It was more storytelling than analytical.

In the Max Kellerman days Rocky passes the eye test with a score of a bazillion.

My observation is that the sports writers from the 50's are the ones who clouded Marciano abilities for decades. In mass they termed Rocky crude and I like many just assumed this to be the casenever bothering to look in detail. They were wrong. The films CLEARLY show Rocky had excellent abilities to slip block bob and weave and counter. He was NOT the open target he was described as. The reason why his skills were so clouded over by the press in the 50's? I can only guess that most of them lived through the Dempsey era and vs a similar crouching aggressive faster higher skilled hwt Rocky was crude in comparison. This I would agree.

    He's such an awkward-looking fighter.

Perry's video explains well why this is, though.

Such a pity guys like him aren't around anymore.

My observation is the sports writers from the 50's actually saw him fight in the flesh from ringside.

Sugar and Kellerman belong bracketed together, that's my observation!
