    Max Schmeling uses head movement, a crouch, and a pawing jab to try and get Louis to stretch himself out with the jab. Schmeling successfully gets Louis in his range, and counters with a sharp right hand. A strategy that would be prevalent throughout the whole fight.

    The sequence repeats with a stabilized version of the clip.
    This causes lots of camera shake, but enhances the depth and perceived physical space around the subjects.

    Great microism of the entire fight. Brilliant fight plan and execution by Max. He was so patient in the face of a monster puncher. Really a remarkable performance

    Louis seems to show concern on his face after Schmeling would react to eating combos looking reinvigorated, determined and stoic. Very hard to believe the same man got crushed in a single round not long after.

    In the rematch Louis wasn’t looking to box smart for a while, he was looking to finish brutally.

    Louis did the smart thing never letting Schmeling get into the fight in the rematch. I don't think he actually corrected his flaw of the jab all that much - he just blitzed Max who- often stayed up and continued to take punishment rather than take a knee to regain his composure. As a teenager he was stopped along the ropes by Larry Gains, and he stayed up far to long when Baer was rallying. It was a survival flaw.

    It was a fantastic adaptation from Louis. He really was a two hand killing machine with excellent ring presence, timing and hand speed. I'm assuming he realised Schmelling was only going to take him out from accumulated volleys throughout the fight. Also consider that Louis was still improving and in that 2 year stretch between the first and second fight, he was busy fighting the best the world had to offer, Schmelling on the other hand had a small selection of uninspiring opponents. It's a shame we have hind sight for this one, as there must have been an aura of unpredictability going into the second fight, but knowing how good Louis was, such a devastating victory seems a little bit mute to me because of that very reason.
