Just watched the fight yesterday and was then surprised to read that Tonna caught a lot of flack for claiming that Monzon hit him in the back of the head. The tape seems pretty clear to me... https://streamable.com/l663
Nah, not a dirty punch...Tonna was always looking for an out to get an opponent disqualified, like he did with Valdez too. Monzon just reached over with that right and caught an awkward, twisting, turning opponent who wasn't averse to pulling some dirty tricks himself. Monzon was basically a pretty clean fighter TBH,...for instance vs Tony Licata, I forget the round, but Tony lost his balance for a spell against the ropes, and Monzon just stepped back to let him get his balance again. I think it was Don Dunphy who was calling that bout, who commented on Monzon being "sportsmanlike" in doing that.
Tonna was the dirtier fighter throughout the fight and he probably overplayed that blow but I don't see how it can be disputed that it was a hard punch aimed directly at the back of Tonna's head.
Just one of those things....and Monzon didn't need to intentionally fight dirty to beat a guy like Gratien Tonna.
Tonna was disgraceful in how he used to fake being fouled...see the Valdez fight...he did the same thing.
He definitely did hit him on the back of the head but Tonna made the most of it. He had enough about him to claim foul while acting like he was poleaxed. He was a dirty/rough fighter himself.
Nobody's saying that Monzon needed to intentionally fight dirty to beat a guy like Tonna. But it sure looks like he beat Tonna with an intentionally dirty punch to me. He was looking directly at the back of Tonna's head and threw a punch that hit him there. It was an egregiously illegal punch. He was probably just frustrated by Tonna's earlier fouling.
Protect yourself at all times. I think I read that somewhere. Turn your back on an opponent and you'd better expect to be hit in the back of the head. Can't fault Monzon. Dude fell like a Tonna bricks.
IMO Tonna was a winey punk; strong with big muscles but the left tit wilted when he was in with the big boys. His biggest 'claim to fame' was his big shot against Valdez that hurt him but Rodrigo was going nowhere.
:dealRight you are jowcol,...Tonna had a definite heart problem,...one that wasn't necessary to see a cardiologist about....he was a cheese eating, surrender ****** IMO who loved the DQ call.
